Wrigley, William (1861-1932)Index. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé : Small cause, large effect – that is true not only of the famous »butterfly effect«. It applies also to so many other things in daily life and of course it applies to graphic design. A detail such as bold use of just one impressive colour can make all the difference. We think you´ll agree this technique has certainly produced an eye-catching result on this month´s cover, of which there is not one, but two variants!
As regards content, the focus is our novum+ section is exclusively on details: For this we talked to type guru Friedrich Forssmann about the obsessiveness that is essential for any typographer, conducted an interview with designer-craftswoman Katja Knahn and explored the new visual identity of City College in New York. We also had a very productive chat with Carlos Magro, Creative Director at Interbrand Spain, about his unusual CD – called »Mind the Gap« – for an international firm of lawyers. And we feature a jaw-dropping interior design for a restaurant – with walls lined with thousands of bones. Cadena of Mexico tells us how their design came about.
In the Showroom this time, we have a diversity of styles and genres: Fantastic collages from Elisa Vendramin await your inspection, along with sophisticated packaging from British studio Iwant. Plus we reveal how design greats Snask with their rock ‘n’ roll discipline made it to the top – and not only with their redesign for North Korea. Beatriz Costo often lets her creativity flow into editorial design projects, and our cover designers – Dortmund-based design studio konter – show us their inspiring portfolio.
How do you protect creative titles? This is the question tackled by lawyer Andrijana Kojic; she gives practical advice in her legal column. And Andreas Koop in his column muses on why, even in design commissions for industry, so much trickery and cheating goes on … unreal realities!
And – did you know that Wrigley´s now iconic chewing gum was actually not the manufacturer’s own product at all in the early days? From give-away to world fame – find out more about this exciting brand story….
The cover
If you want to be subtle, then avoid Electric Blood and Vibrant Arsenic from the Action range of papermakers Gmund. But if you want to make a splash, then you´ll be very, very happy with this material. Electric Blood is a very specific colour – somewhere between red and orange with an almost neon-like effect. A special surface treatment, applied after the paper has been produced, gives it that distinctive shimmer. Vibrant Arsenic, with the same surface, is a resplendent pure neon yellow. We have used both in producing the cover for this month´s novum, but whichever one you have ended up with, there’s no chance of losing it on your shelves.
All the ten expressive colours in Gmund Action – available from Papyrus – keep their promise: Go to Hell Black, Alpine Sparkling Water, Crystal Vanilla Sorbet, Nuclear Acid, Clear Sky Blue, Pastel Heart Attack, Night Offshore Blue, Dark Silver Cloud and of course also Vibrant Arsenic und Electric Blood. Whether you use them for packaging or envelopes, this colour range really grabs the attention. Available in 300 to 430 gsm, any application is guaranteed to get noticed. So, for communication that really stands out, choose a muted colour for the letter and put it in one of these Gmund Action envelopes.
The finish
Any complicated processing of these visually prominent materials would almost be one detail too far, so the designers at konter studio limited themselves to the contrast-rich progression in one special colour (Pantone 286 C) and a fine embossing carefully finished with hot foil. Thus finished, their artwork uniquely interprets the focus theme this month in a unique way: »Complexity, yes. Sometimes simple but hidden, allows playfulness« … to be discovered on the back cover of this issue. »We love the details. Very often it´s not the overall picture that we delight in, but the tiny, hidden, special aspects, that sometimes can be implemented without an enormous budget. And things really get rewarding when have the opportunity to spend time on such details. So what we produced here is a motif that at first sight is just a burst of colour, but on closer inspection you see the delicate embossing and the hidden content,« say Michelle Flunger and Sascha Schilling of konter – Studio für Gestaltung.
The foil embossing was done by the Forum Prägefolien Veredelung, a society of finishing experts and specialists offering advice and services in the different types of hot foil stamping, from micro-embossing to structure, relief and blind blocking. www.look-and-feel.net

Travail du papier -- 21e siècle
Typographie - DesignIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé :
Our November issue plays with perception: Is it embossed or some kind of optical illusion? A brand new way of dealing with hot foil stamping is the secret behind this visual trick – conjuring up a 3D impression for the eyes this respresents an exciting new addition to the print toolkit. And it´s a perfect introduction to our focus theme this month: creative paper!Note de contenu :
A trick of the eye
When the first samples of Trustseal SFX arrived in our editorial office we were immediately enthusiastic – the optical illusion of a 3D element is simply fascinating and it shows once more that we have by no means explored all the possibilities of print.
This is amply demonstrated in the world tour that we take you on in this issue focusing on »Creative Paper«: Intricate design work from the Czech Republic, elegance from France and a touch of the experimental from Brazil, as well as haptic support for a luxury brand from Austria and quality business papers from Taiwan! Laser-cutting, pop-up elements, fine papers and a cornucopia of print finishes, plus lot of creative sensitivity – all await discovery in this month’s novum. We also bring you an interview with print specialist Frank Denninghoff (Gräfe Druckveredelung), who reveals the latest trends and possibilities in finishing.
The Showroom section in novum 11.18 is also packed with interest: To start with there’s an interview with Peter Mussfeldt, who emigrated from Germany to Ecuador many years ago and is now regarded there as a pioneer of design. Then we look behind the scenes at the much talked about studio APFEL in London and, in conversation with the Spanish bureau Esiete, we learn that design agencies can have a very different philosophy. Another designer who very much does things his own way is Victor Balko – his editorial design projects were an immediate hit with us here at novum.
The cover
A few years ago Studio Twopoints.net produced a cover for us that caused a real stir with its thermosensitive surface – an image of a sunbather turned red when the cover was exposed to UV light (novum 08.13). For the art work for this November’s cover, the team from Hamburg created a graphic-geometric solution to really do justice to and highlight the special hot foil technique and it’s 3D effect. Twopoints: »›Form is the body of colour – colour is the soul of form‹ – so wrote graphic designer and artist Karl Gerstner, who died last year. We owe a great debt of thanks to Gerstner. His approach to design problems has had a strong influence on us. For this cover of novum we captured the soul of autumn in a flexible visual system. The form system comes from investigations carried out for a book about the design of flexible visual systems that we are currently working on.«
Available in the colours gold and silver, you can do quite a lot with »Trustseal SFX«, the latest development from Kurz. But one or two key points must be observed. All of them are explained in this current issue of novum. As for the material – the choice is wide: As ever, for hot foil stamping smooth, coated papers are good, ones that support a sharp printed image.
In the range from Munken (available from: Papyrus) we came across Munken Pure (300 g/qm) in cream white, a variant with a natural surface that is neither extremely smooth nor extremely rough – it has a pleasant feel and the foil contrasts well with it. The whole series of these design papers is available in a wide range of grammages (from 80 to 400 g/qm), and in 1.13 to 1.3 volume. The product family encompasses Kristall, Polar, Lynx and Pure, in colours from brilliant white to high and natural white, as well as cream white – each in a smooth or rougher surface. For stiffer weights there are four papers in »rough« quality, with 1.4 volume and a distinctive surface feel.

Our November issue is really coming on strong. The cover draws attention with a shimmering hot foil and letterpress and inside the magazine a lot of great projects from studios all around the world await our readers. In our novum+ section we wanted to know, what it feels like to work in the countryside. What problems do designers face, what does the daily routine look like and what makes living in the countryside so attractive? Out in the sticks there is quite a lot to discover …Note de contenu : Countryside
Like few other professions, designers are free to choose where to work from. Decent WiFi, a laptop and a bit of discipline and Bob’s your uncle. But what does it really feel like, if you dare to move to the countryside permanently? When clients are far away and visiting exhibitions, concerts or conferences means travelling for a day and how to deal with sceptical natives? We asked designers, who followed up on their dream and who developed different strategies to reconcile work and county-living.
In our showroom section too, there is a lot to discover. Oslo for example has indulged in a new corporate design and we looked behind the scenes of this complex design process. In Qatar athletes demonstrate marvellous achievements, but the small country also sports a design scene that is worth looking at. And of course, typography is always a topic in novum magazine. In this issue we visited Dutch calligrapher Guido de Boer and his impressive letterings as well as the French typo-lovers from My Name is Wendy.

Mechanical pulp board may be tricky to bind, but it feels very nice to the touch and it can be used for all kinds of print finishing techniques such as hot foil embossing or letterpress.

We believe illustration is a wonderfully adaptable form of expression – it can handle complexity, communicate humour and change minds. »We love the fact that illustration can transcend any theme, style and field,« enthused the London-based creative duo Le.Blue in an interview with them on our novum+ theme.Note de contenu : novum 11.20 »creative paper«
There’s no denying we are passionate about paper. And when it comes to »creative paper« then our imaginations start to run riot. There are just so many aspects to cover with this fascinating material: be it unusual visual treatments or surface finishes, all kinds of conceptual approaches, and even the smell of different kinds of paper. Whenever we choose creative paper as our featured topic, we know it will be a tough job to select just which projects and studios to present.
Because paper offers up so many diverse aspects, we have put together a colourful bouquet for you in our novum+ section this month. From sustainable packaging and paper art to artful printing and bookbinding – this issue shows what being creative with paper really means.
The cover
Together with our partners we eagerly rolled up our sleeves and produced something special: the paper we chose is Stardream Rosequarz from Igepa, whose wonderful quality lends itself perfectly to finishing that really pulls out all the stops. On the outer envelope the hot foil Luxor 396 Orange from Kurz sets up a charming contrast to the delicately shimmering pink of the paper, on the inside cover pages we used a rich green (Luxor 390). But why stop when you are enjoying yourself? As well as foil finishing, we also used embossing and stamping. The artistic interplay between raised and recessed elements is all down to the skills of the experts at effektiv Druck+Veredelung.
The cover of the November issue features some rather unusual combinations, but, as we all know, opposites attract!
All this and more awaits in this issue of novum!
