Transparence (art)Index. décimale : 72 Architecture Résumé : Facades that let in Light
We humans long for daylight, a view of greenery, and a sense of connection. Yet today, transparent building envelopes seem less in demand. Instead of granting views in and out, we create retreats. What forms of transparency remain desirable amid social uncertainty and urban densification? And do transparent or translucent envelopes still make sense when contemporary energy concepts are applied? Light, air, and sun are no longer universally welcome. The spaces behind the climate envelope must be protected from solar gains and heat loss. Limited opening ratios, smart building technology, and algorithm-driven facade design have become the norm. In such scenarios, people are treated as disruptive elements, better kept passive.
Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal show that another way is possible. Working with 51N4E in Brussels, Lacaton & Vassal recently extended a residential block in the Peterbos district using their familiar approach: adding new winter gardens. Transparent and translucent sliding panels alternate, while curtains provide shade or privacy when needed. The result is adaptable space that responds to changing conditions – yet always leaves the final decision to the human user. A drawn curtain can create a sense of withdrawal, but it can just as easily be opened again[n° ou bulletin] 12.2025 - 2025-12-09 - Transaprenz, Transluzenz = Transparency, Translucency [texte imprimé] . - 2025.

Verre en décoration architecturaleIndex. décimale : 72 Architecture Résumé : published 11/01/2016
Clear, transparent, and democratic. These were the axioms of Germany’s postwar architecture. Transparency had a symbolic meaning for the country’s new public buildings. In 1961, for example, Baden-Württemberg’s new state parliament building was the first such institution to be completed after the war; all of its facades were completely glazed. Günter Behnisch’s lofty, daylit plenary assembly hall in the German Bundestag in Bonn also served as an example of an open society. Federal legislators convened there until 1999, when the government moved to Berlin.
Transparency and democracy were synonymous. In this issue we present different contemporary manifestations of transparency. The projects are located in France, Estonia, China, and Germany and range from chapels and apartment houses to museums and departmental buildings at universities; they have transparent and translucent facades, narrow operable sashes, and carefully orchestrated views to the surroundings.
As DETAIL’s new editor-in-chief, I look forward to keeping in touch with you via this Editorial column. Our experienced team will continue to present you timely topics – as in the past, architecture itself will show the way. Our next issue, which appears on December 1, explores applications of colour in architecture. Herzog & De Meuron (1978 - ...)Index. décimale : 72 Architecture Résumé : The way a building is used may very well change over the course of its life cycle. The British artist Damien Hirst, for example, is showing his art collection in listed buildings that were built some 100 years ago as theatre workshops and have been masterfully renovated and expanded by Caruso St John Architects. The Elbe Philharmonic Hall in Hamburg, in contrast, uses the Hanseatic city’s former quay warehouse as a base and stands out clearly from this existing plinth; the controversial project by Herzog & de Meuron finally opens to the public on January 11 – our contributing editor Frank Kaltenbach got a sneak preview and presents his thoughts on the building in this issue.
Our January / February issue focusses on refurbishments, rehabilitations, and additions. And these need not be associated with converting the building to a new use: many interventions also improve upon existing concepts. Following the restructuring by Studio Marco Vermeulen, the museum in De Biesbosch, a nature sancturay in the Netherlands, flows seemlessly into the surrounding polder landscape. And the historic Fondaco dei Tedeschi on the Canal Grande in Venice – which OMA has renovated for use as a high-end department store – has always been a platform for commerce. An interview with Reinier de Graaf gives a glimpse of the philosophy that lies behind the Office for Metropolitan Architecture’s refurbishment projects.
Best wishes for the coming year! We hope you enjoy our January / February issue.En ligne : http://www.detail-online.com/magazine/refurbishment-conversion-29289/ [n° ou bulletin] Vol.2017:N°1/2 - 2017-01-01 - Umnutzung, Ergänzung, Sanierung = Refurbishment, Conversion [texte imprimé] . - 2017.
