published 10/01/2016
Over the past 25 years, the world of architecture has witnessed many changes. Two and a half decades ago, Zaha Hadid had realized none of her powerful structures. In Japan, Tadao Ando had just achieved an international breakthrough with his Church of the Light in Ibaraki, and Foster had still not set his dome on the Reichstag building in Berlin. In the early 1990s, nobody spoke of “sustainable building” and certainly not of “BIM”.
The world of professional journals was quite different, too. The internet was not a rival medium. The first computers were only just beginning to appear in editorial offices, and the precise drawings found in DETAIL were still being neatly rendered in ink on tracing paper. In those days, the very small editorial team worked on six issues of the journal a year plus a Construction Manual every two or three years. Today, roughly 15 books are produced annually as well as many more journals, including “Concept” and “Green”, “Inside” and “Structure”.
After being responsible for the content of DETAIL for 25 years, the time has now come for me to hand over the reins. This is the final issue of which I shall be editor-in-chief, and I should like to thank readers for the great trust they have shown. The high degree of recognition we have gained for our work – on an international level, too – has always been a tremendous spur for me and the entire editorial team. I shall not be taking my leave entirely, however, for my links with DETAIL will be maintained in the form of further contributions I shall make from time to time. Christian Schittich

Verre en décoration architecturaleIndex. décimale : 72 Architecture Résumé : published 11/01/2016
Clear, transparent, and democratic. These were the axioms of Germany’s postwar architecture. Transparency had a symbolic meaning for the country’s new public buildings. In 1961, for example, Baden-Württemberg’s new state parliament building was the first such institution to be completed after the war; all of its facades were completely glazed. Günter Behnisch’s lofty, daylit plenary assembly hall in the German Bundestag in Bonn also served as an example of an open society. Federal legislators convened there until 1999, when the government moved to Berlin.
Transparency and democracy were synonymous. In this issue we present different contemporary manifestations of transparency. The projects are located in France, Estonia, China, and Germany and range from chapels and apartment houses to museums and departmental buildings at universities; they have transparent and translucent facades, narrow operable sashes, and carefully orchestrated views to the surroundings.
As DETAIL’s new editor-in-chief, I look forward to keeping in touch with you via this Editorial column. Our experienced team will continue to present you timely topics – as in the past, architecture itself will show the way. Our next issue, which appears on December 1, explores applications of colour in architecture. Immeubles de bureaux - Constructions
Immeubles de bureaux -- Dessins et plansIndex. décimale : 72 Architecture Résumé :
published 09/01/2016
Office buildings as a typology cover a broad spectrum and accommodate many different workplace models, ranging from cellular offices to non-territorial open-plan concepts with desk-sharing. Since constraints relating to working conditions change more rapidly than the actual buildings, flexibility is called for in the architecture. The present issue of DETAIL shows the enormous gamut of modern office design: from a suite inserted in a converted warehouse in Tilburg and a company headquarters in Tyrol to a heterogeneous investment complex in Paris.
The Process section contains a detailed presentation of the Erste Campus in Vienna. Here, Henke Schreieck, the architects, have created an impressive ensemble with distinct urban qualities for a staff of nearly 5,000. Despite the large areas of glazing, the inner facade layer, consisting of wooden elements, conveys a sense of warmth, while the wall coating in the atrium lends this space an individual, haptic note. Last, but not least, the entrance hall and extensive external areas are open to the public and play an active role in the life of the city.
