Vieux papiers -- RecyclageIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé : The Oktoberfest in Munich is not normally relevant to the design world, but in this issue of novum it serves as a wonderful source of inspiration for the cover, which is quite literally an all-round delight. On a standard recycling card we used different hot-foil stampings, adding micro-embossing for stylish accent. A total of four different colour variants was produced, finished with two foils in silver and gold and a gold spot colour – the wrap-around motif comes from the Munich design agency Milch+Honig.
Other great projects that exploit the possibilities of paper, print and finishing can be found in our novum+ and Showroom sections. There you can enjoy first-class design from France, Hungary, Norway and the Netherlands, as well as eight pages of prize-winning posters from Germany, Austria and Switzerland.Note de contenu : Paper & Print
Multisensorics is a big theme at the moment in marketing and communication. After all, we human beings don´t just see, we can also feel, hear and smell. Things that appeal to us on several levels are therefore perceived more intensively, we feel them to be more positive and we remember them for longer.
Unusually designed print products can achieve this sustained effect. In the novum+ section this month we bring you lots of exciting examples, such as intelligently conceived packaging, illustrations with hand-made charm and campaigns that attract attention through high-quality finishes. Also there´s lots to discover about recycling papers, beautiful books and sophisticated CIs.
In the Showroom section Dutch designer Gilles de Brock explains how coding can boost creativity. Treize Grammes from France takes an opposite line, building charming settings by hand, and Kind from Norway impresses with visual identities that combine emotions with Nordic minimalism. Patrick Rössler presents graphic design treasures from the Bauhaus era, the Hungarian design agency Classmate shows how designers collaborate across different countries and still manage to maintain a coherent line in terms of design. Last, but not least, we interviewed Anette Lenz, jury member of the competition »100 Best Posters — Germany, Austria, Switzerland«, about trends and the meaning of posters today.
The cover
Why just one cover, when you can have a variety? Embracing this idea, the October issue of novum appears in four different colours and was embossed with two different hot foils and a gold spot colour. For the first time we also used micro-embossing, a technique that enables very fine details to be worked into the embossing die. Often this technique is used in protection against forgery, but as you see from our cover, it is also a great way to create intriguing optical accents.
On the wrap-around cover we used five embossing dies in different sizes, made by MSP Prägetechnik. As both larger areas and also fine details were embossed, it was necessary to do extensive testing to produce the best results with foils (Kurz) and paper (RecyCard from Papyrus Deutschland). The embossing itself also required great skill and sensitivity and that was delivered superbly by August Conzelmann AG.
The design on the cover comes from Milch+Honig, and, as a design bureau based in Munich, for the October issue the subject foremost in many people´s minds here is the Oktoberfest. As the designers at Milch+Honig have extensive experience with high-end print products, the finishing technique, the paper and the design were all expertly coordinated to produce a beautiful and successful result.
And, as masters of all that, Milch+Honig went one step further: with micro-embossing to integrate hidden messages. Working with the motion agency Paul Bewegt, they also concealed one or two things in the cover of novum – digitally, you understand. Using augmented reality parts of the cover can be brought to life – you can see this via an app on your smartphone or tablet.

Design explains the world
Complex contexts explained through graphic design: novum 08.19 presents studios and designers who specialise in data visualisation and have produced some quite amazing work in this field. In the Showroom we again look over the shoulders of creatives ….
In an interview with our correspondent Susanne Schaller, Farmgroup of Thailand tell us about their philosophy and about the design scene in that country. We also bring you Chris Tille, a truly exceptional photographer and artist who takes us to the stars – his fascinating works are mostly based on scientific data and calculations. And – nomen est omen – the Austrian studio Icarus delights us with their high-flying graphics; clipped wings are not for them! Bureau Collective of Switzerland opens up their amazing portfolio for us and illustrator Frau Isa shows us her charming illustrations. Plus: Belgian designer Davy Dooms treats us to some strong typographic solutions.
novum+: Data visualization
Making complex contexts easy to understand, visualising complexity without oversimplifying the content – data visualisation has always been a highly respected design discipline. We talked to Gert Franke, co-founder of Clever°Franke, one of the leading design studios in this genre. What changes do they think are needed in design education? What drives them to tackle so many complex free projects? And, is there anything that is just too complex to present through the medium of graphic design?
No less exciting was the interview with The New York Times, which each day publishes infographics of the highest quality in their print and web editions. This look behind the scenes will astound you.
With a visit to The Visual Agency we commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci: The Codex Atlanticus project uses highly modern means to dip into history. These and other articles give you a chance to delve deep into the broad field of data visualization…
The cover
For our cover this month Clever°Franke let us use a detail from one of their data visualisations – even without a context, this excerpt is an aesthetic delight that you can interpret freely. As a brief, we simply stipulated the colour silver – because we were very keen to use the highly pigmented Suprametal® 510 VMP from the French ink specialist Radior. As a perfect material for this we discovered Real Black (James Cropper, sales: Römerturm), which certainly lived up to its name. This deep-black, carbon-free paper (here in 350 gsm) has a superb feel and a natural-looking surface. The print result has an almost three-dimensional depth, and Vogl printers really drew out the maximum here with paper and ink. For example, the logotype was printed three times in white and the silver part went through the printer twice. More inside this issue on how this cover was produced.

Storytelling has always been an effective tool in communication. Every brand, every company has a story to tell ... just waiting to be discovered and appropriately presented. In novum 09.19 you get the chance to compare a wide range of different approaches to this task, e.g. with a focus on illustration, text or animation.
You can purchase a PDF of novum 09.19 for EUR 9,99.

We talked to experts with many years of storytelling experience, and bring you the background behind some exciting stories. In the Showroom section we cast a glance at this year´s European Design Awards, travel with you to Austria, the US and Singapore and present lots of inspiration, from illustration to graphics and digital highlights.
Our correspondent Susanne Schaller, for example, visited Bureau in Singapore and learned about the interesting philosophy behind their designs. In an article about Erste Liga, you can read more about the designer behind the cover of novum 05.19. We also bring you the delightful illustrations of Julia Schwarz and take you along to the studio of Solid Bold in Austria. International and diverse – this issue again takes a wide sweep through different design genres. Not forgetting of course, the chance to inspect the winning entries in the European Design Awards.
novum+: storytelling
We explore the focal theme of storytelling from quite different perspectives. Insights into brand development and customer magazines come from interviews with branding specialists Jäger & Jäger and publishing experts from Muehlhausmoers. And, as regards digital creations, we learn much from the storytelling short films of The Lot Creative. In this up-to-date review of storytelling solutions, we bring you the background behind the success stories.
The cover
The cover, too, tells a story: After eighteen years as editor-in-chief, Bettina Schulz is handing over the reins to Christine Moosmann as of this issue – Christian Weiss has captured this information in a charming illustration. The paper used is Bauhaus Dessau from Gmund, a material that is all about quality and clarity. This unpretentious new paper is available exclusively in the “Selection” range of the Igepa Group. It comes in 120 to 350 gsm and also features two clear white tones.
The excellent processing qualities of Bauhaus Dessau encouraged us not least to dip into the magic box of print finishing tricks: we indulged in a multi-stage embossing process, and added a few delicate accents in hot foil to produce an amazingly sculptured effect. Printers Gräfe Druck made the stars really shine by using Luxor foil in the trend colour of amorphous blue, and our logotype, too, was given a fine, gleaming outline.

Typographie -- 21e siècleIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé : The weddings market is booming, so it was high time for us to turn our gaze on the many highly individual, unusual, sophisticated, graphically charming and sometimes quirky designs for weddings. Presented in this issue are solutions normally reserved for the wedding guests, or ones that your colleagues stash away in the drawer. In the Showroom section, too, we again have a creative world tour for you, with all kinds of exciting designs. Note de contenu :
Creative journey
In our showroom section we whisk you away to nomocreative in Taiwan, where tradition blends beautifully with modern design treatments. Our correspondent Niels Schrader went to visit the great creative Hansje van Halem in Amsterdam, a designer who favours strong typography in combination with almost psychedelic illustrations. Then there´s Perrine Honoré, giving us an insight into her colourful imagery, plus the Studio Eduardo Aires, well known for their visual identity for the city of Porto, but with many other remarkable works in their portfolio. With Murmure, we bring you one of the most exciting studios in France. All in all, a visual world tour with special highlights.
Design for weddings
There can’t be many designers who have not been asked by friends to design the printed materials for their wedding. In novum+ we show some enchanting, opulent, simple, charming, quirky and colourful designs for weddings, none of them “off the peg”. Normally this kind of work never gets included in the portfolio, which is why it is so exciting to take a peek at it now!
The cover
A type of paper with a pleasant feel and in an unusual colour, rich screenprinting in XXX (gold or silver) and a charming interpretation of the novum+ theme of “Designs for weddings” – admittedly, this is more of a creative ménage à trois than a classic marriage … but all the more intriguing because of it.
Sergio Membrillas’ illustrations, which are generally two-dimensional, always raise a smile – in bright, bold colours his images get straight to the core of the message, while also featuring plenty of details to enjoy. For our cover he turned away from the big colour palette and conjured up instead just outlines to capture strong feelings with a smile. The paper is from the Keaykolour range from Antalis, and appropriately the shade is called Rosebud, a highly individual and charming rosewood colour. This range includes 48 colours and so it was a tough choice for our cover, but the 300 gsm Rosebud won it. It was also an excellent base for screenprinting in a rich XXX, with a hint of romance, but not at all kitschy. Sergio Membrillas was more than happy with the combination of haptics and print finish. His outline drawings, by the way, are not a new departure for him – last year this creative published the delightful book »Summer in the city again« (32 pages, black and white, available for €10 from www.summerinthecityagain.bigcartel.com/). And now he has rang out the wedding bells for us, with a fairytale-like romance…

In well over 1,000 issues, it has inspired and informed designers around the world. This is a proud legacy. Sadly, now it is time to say goodbye.
In this final issue of novum we once again present to you an exciting selection of designers and creative studios, and in the novum+ section, we explore orientation systems for diverse applications, among them a community centre and BER, Berlin´s long awaited new airport.
Note de contenu : The cover
One of the more remarkable facts about novum is that it has always had an international readership. And so, with this last cover, we say thank you – in all the native tongues of our readers.
For the paper, we choose Pergraphica Infinite Black in 300 gsm from Mondi. This fine paper is not only very pleasant to the touch, it is also behaves very well in print finishing. Hot foil embossing by Gräfe Druckveredelung sets off the motif beautifully; for the coating we chose the brand new shade Mastered Green from the Trend Collection by Kurz.
