TypographieIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé : Whatever your preference – espresso or cappuccino, black or green tea – for our July issue we have inspected the entire range and selected some very attractive packaging and visual identities from this market segment for you. But apart from the novum+ on »Tea & Coffee«, we have many more visual delights for you to savour in this month’s novum. Note de contenu :
This month our Showroom takes us to the city of Québec in Canada, where Jeremy Hall runs an excellent small studio. Guillermo Flores, alias Orbeh, charms us with his unique illustrations that conjure up brand new worlds. The works of Monica Zec delight in a different way, with intriguing little visual tricks. Then we go to Austria to Seite Zwei, whose portfolio boasts clever and extensive visual identities, and also to Knoed in Poland, where the creations, whether print or digital, are always an experience.
A special kind of design collective goes under the name of Bureau Stabil, based in Saarbrücken. And, finally, we present you an extensive »making of« about the major Lufthansa re-design, realised by Martin et Karczinski.
Our typography section this time features two new fonts that are quite unusual, and our legal corner continues with part two of an article on the new data-protection regulations – explained expertly and in a way that´s easy to understand. If you missed the first part, you can order a back copy of issue 06.18 here.
The mood lightens then in our brand story, which homes in on the long history of Miele with its many charming subjects from various decades.
The cover
A paper that bursts with summer and enjoyment: Dolcelicious presents titbits such as »Lemon Drizzle«, »Roasted Chestnut« and »Elderflower White«, which combine beautifully into a harmonious colour palette. This is just one of the new additions to the Römerturm range and it came from the recent cooperation with the British manufacturer James Cropper.
For our »Coffee & Tea« theme Dolcelicious is of course a perfect fit, and in the nostalgic colours»“Summer Coulis« and »Kiwi Fizz« it conjures up the ice cafés of the 1950s and mouth-watering petit fours. The luxurious surface finishing on this paper is a real eye-catcher, not just when used on covers: it positively gleams (note: also certified for use in direct food contact) in the field of luxury packaging. Whether for a folding carton or a carrier bag, this brand new material (available in eleven colours and grammages up to 330 gsm) inspired our cover designers Mursal Nasr and Patrick Marc Sommer (typoint, www.typoint.com): If you place the two novum variants in pink and green next to each other, you get a whimsical coffee table scene that looks an absolute delight. Dolcelicious can of course be finished quite easily with many different techniques – its great touch & feel, however, in combination with the expressive colours, has turned our cover into a really »hands-on« experience. Grab those cups and enjoy!

TypographieIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Note de contenu : Are computer programs replacing designers? Well, not yet at least. But designers can write their own programs and, using these self-made tools, open up new possibilities in design. The cover of our April issue is the result of a fascinating cooperation – it combines moving type with sophisticated printing technology. The design, from Studio Mut, draws on hardware and software, providing one example of what the future might hold.
What does the future hold for typographic design? Our April issue ventures a few answers. In the novum+ section, we present classic type design and also feature a range of projects that show how typography can address political and social problems. The cover, too, puts forward one vision of how typography could develop in the future. The motif came about in a cooperation with Studio Mut and other creatives: Think Work Observe made available the typeface Kunst Grotesk as a pre-release, and Kiel Danger Mutschelknaus developed a program that can be used to generate moving type. Using these components Studio Mut created a motif that draws on software and hardware – digitally generated type skilfully combined with sophisticated print technology.En ligne : https://novum.graphics/en/magazine/archive/detail/novum-0420/ [n° ou bulletin] 04.20 - 2020-04-12 [texte imprimé] . - 2020.

TypographieIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé : We’ve all seen them – the now legendary Donald Trump covers by Edel Rodriguez. They are an extreme example, but they show very well just how much power editorial illustration can wield. In this issue we not only talk to Edel Rodriguez but present a range of other noteworthy illustrators whose drawings are opening up brand new worlds.
We also talked to Dutch design legend Gert Dumbar and feature numerous great studios from around the world. Plus there´s our annual Christmas draw, with many attractive design prizes to win.
Illustrations can be attractive decoration, but they can also offer a completely different way of interpreting a text, tapping into further aspects and opening up new levels of meaning for the reader. Editorial illustration can do all of that, while also spanning an amazing variety of styles.
In our novum+ section we bring you the delicate artistic touch of Paula Troxler’s work, and the »hidden-object«-like illustrations of Yann Bastard. Mario Wagner demonstrates his skills in creating atmosphere and compressing information in a sober style reminiscent of infographics. In an interview Martin Fengel explains talks about the challenge of coming up with new visual images for a weekly column, Emily Haasch delights with intriguing collages and Simon Landrein walks the line between retro and lowbrow. Bold and mysterious compositions are Simon Landrein’s strength. And, last but not least, we present Edel Rodriguez, who achieved world fame with his cover illustrations of Donald Trump.
After all those powerful illustrations, we turn of course to graphic design. In a conversation with Niels Schrader, Gert Dumbar looks back on his eventful life and reveals what one of Holland´s most influential designers expects from the future. From bases in Paris and Tel Aviv, the Daidt studio combine technology, philosophy and design in an attractive whole and Work in Progress of Oslo impresses with sophisticated CIs. Then, from half way around the world, the multidisciplinary team at Muuaaa shows that creativity is in the air in sunny Puerto Rico.Note de contenu : The cover
Unusually for novum, this cover was produced without any special finishes at all. For the paper we chose Tintoretto Ceylon from Fedrigoni, for its fineness and subtlety combined with a special character. It harmonises perfectly with the motif, created by French designer Thomas Danthony to interpret this month´s focus on editorial illustration and at the same time to demonstrate how illustration can play with different levels of interpretation.
A well chosen paper and a strong motif – sometimes you don´t need much more to create a good cover…
