Typographie - DesignIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé : »Graphics for film« is the topic of this month’s novum + and we present corporate identities, animation films and interviews.
Film and graphic design have a lot in common. There are great corporate identities to be found like the one for Distrito Films, designed by Anagrama. But there are also a lot of fantastic animation films or unusual trailers for television. The title sequences Henry Hobson designed for the Oscars open the heart of any graphic designer and Salon Alpin created wonderful pieces of art using plasticine and paper. Have a look at 16 pages of »graphics for film« – curtains up!
In our Showroom we invite readers to visit Studio Daad in s'Hertogenbosch and Atto in Milan. We take a closer look the new identity of robot builder KUKA and pay a visit to Aberjung in Eastern Tyrol. Ungestrichen from Krefeld charms with reduced graphics and Polish illustrator Katarzyna Surman-Pusz invites our readers to her colorful universe.
The paper
For the cover of this issue we chose the uncoated paper Aspero bright, a volume paper with a relatively rough surface. This contrasts nicely with the hot foil in shimmering gold and shiny black.
The design of the cover
The design of the cover was done by Mexican studio Anagrama. The inspiration came from film awards and movie posters.En ligne : https://www.behance.net/gallery/46400933/novum-0117-graphics-in-film [n° ou bulletin] 01.17 - 2017-01-12 - Graphics in film [texte imprimé] . - 2017.

For a long time perfection was the only goal, now we value the small imperfections, the individual features that make up the charm of the hand-made. The April issue of novum, dedicated to the theme of »hand-made«, presents a range of projects that have been carefully and lovingly hand-crafted. Woodcuts, screenprints, tape art, hand-lettering – all of this and more awaits your discovery in the new novum. And, in line with the theme, the cover of this month´s issue is also hand-made: Students from the University of Applied Sciences in Münster numbered each copy by hand!Note de contenu : The cover
Our plan was to do all the covers in risographic printing, but sadly this was abandoned because of the technical requirements. But in an issue dedicated to the theme of “hand-made”, the cover itself also had to feature some element of hand-crafting. For this we were pleased to have support from students at the University of Applied Sciences in Münster who literally hand-processed each copy!
12,000 covers were numbered in sequence by the budding illustrators – a remarkable achievement. The numbering takes up another aspect of the cover of novum 04.18: As we had to rule our risographic printing, we decided instead to produce individual risographs and place them on the cover. Only our subscribers will have a chance to be the lucky recipients of these signed and numbered art prints. But all our other readers can still enjoy a hand-lettered unique print. As long as stocks last, the risographs will be available to buy as a pack in our online shop.
The risographs
The designs for the risographs were created on the illustration course of Felix Scheinberger and Rüdiger Quass von Deyen at the University of Applied Sciences in Münster. The only brief was to interpret the theme of “hand-made” and the results are most impressive and diverse. Fourteen designs in total were produced, each illustrating different aspects of the hand-made and hand-craft work, or the process of creating such work.
Click here for more about the individual designs…
The risographs were printed in the Munich studio Herr & Frau Rio which has years of experience and interest in this technique. As it is a very special technique, it was important to choose the right material. We used the paper Extrarough by Metapaper which has a very rough surface, as the name says, and also delivers very good printability.
The content
In the novum+ section this month we focus on the theme of »hand-made« and bring you a broad spectrum of works, from woodcut book illustrations and screen prints to hand-painted shop windows, gilded labels, hand-lettering and lots more.
In our Showroom, we go to Berlin to the creative studio of Stan Hema and to all-round talent Vinzent Britz. In London we visit sought-after designers the Yarza Twins, and we report on the American studio Colony. Austria beckons, too, as we drop in on Dunkelblaufastschwarz, returning then to Germany to visit Mydsgn in the Bavarian Allgäu.

Typographie -- 21e siècleIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé : The weddings market is booming, so it was high time for us to turn our gaze on the many highly individual, unusual, sophisticated, graphically charming and sometimes quirky designs for weddings. Presented in this issue are solutions normally reserved for the wedding guests, or ones that your colleagues stash away in the drawer. In the Showroom section, too, we again have a creative world tour for you, with all kinds of exciting designs. Note de contenu :
Creative journey
In our showroom section we whisk you away to nomocreative in Taiwan, where tradition blends beautifully with modern design treatments. Our correspondent Niels Schrader went to visit the great creative Hansje van Halem in Amsterdam, a designer who favours strong typography in combination with almost psychedelic illustrations. Then there´s Perrine Honoré, giving us an insight into her colourful imagery, plus the Studio Eduardo Aires, well known for their visual identity for the city of Porto, but with many other remarkable works in their portfolio. With Murmure, we bring you one of the most exciting studios in France. All in all, a visual world tour with special highlights.
Design for weddings
There can’t be many designers who have not been asked by friends to design the printed materials for their wedding. In novum+ we show some enchanting, opulent, simple, charming, quirky and colourful designs for weddings, none of them “off the peg”. Normally this kind of work never gets included in the portfolio, which is why it is so exciting to take a peek at it now!
The cover
A type of paper with a pleasant feel and in an unusual colour, rich screenprinting in XXX (gold or silver) and a charming interpretation of the novum+ theme of “Designs for weddings” – admittedly, this is more of a creative ménage à trois than a classic marriage … but all the more intriguing because of it.
Sergio Membrillas’ illustrations, which are generally two-dimensional, always raise a smile – in bright, bold colours his images get straight to the core of the message, while also featuring plenty of details to enjoy. For our cover he turned away from the big colour palette and conjured up instead just outlines to capture strong feelings with a smile. The paper is from the Keaykolour range from Antalis, and appropriately the shade is called Rosebud, a highly individual and charming rosewood colour. This range includes 48 colours and so it was a tough choice for our cover, but the 300 gsm Rosebud won it. It was also an excellent base for screenprinting in a rich XXX, with a hint of romance, but not at all kitschy. Sergio Membrillas was more than happy with the combination of haptics and print finish. His outline drawings, by the way, are not a new departure for him – last year this creative published the delightful book »Summer in the city again« (32 pages, black and white, available for €10 from www.summerinthecityagain.bigcartel.com/). And now he has rang out the wedding bells for us, with a fairytale-like romance…

But designers can write their own programs and, using these self-made tools, open up new possibilities in design. What does the future hold for typographic design? Our April issue ventures a few answers. In the novum+ section, we present classic type design and also feature a range of projects that show how typography can address political and social problems. The cover, too, puts forward one vision of how typography could develop in the future. The motif came about in a cooperation with Studio Mut and other creatives: Think Work Observe made available the typeface Kunst Grotesk as a pre-release, and Kiel Danger Mutschelknaus developed a program that can be used to generate moving type. Vieux papiers -- RecyclageIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé : The Oktoberfest in Munich is not normally relevant to the design world, but in this issue of novum it serves as a wonderful source of inspiration for the cover, which is quite literally an all-round delight. On a standard recycling card we used different hot-foil stampings, adding micro-embossing for stylish accent. A total of four different colour variants was produced, finished with two foils in silver and gold and a gold spot colour – the wrap-around motif comes from the Munich design agency Milch+Honig.
Other great projects that exploit the possibilities of paper, print and finishing can be found in our novum+ and Showroom sections. There you can enjoy first-class design from France, Hungary, Norway and the Netherlands, as well as eight pages of prize-winning posters from Germany, Austria and Switzerland.Note de contenu : Paper & Print
Multisensorics is a big theme at the moment in marketing and communication. After all, we human beings don´t just see, we can also feel, hear and smell. Things that appeal to us on several levels are therefore perceived more intensively, we feel them to be more positive and we remember them for longer.
Unusually designed print products can achieve this sustained effect. In the novum+ section this month we bring you lots of exciting examples, such as intelligently conceived packaging, illustrations with hand-made charm and campaigns that attract attention through high-quality finishes. Also there´s lots to discover about recycling papers, beautiful books and sophisticated CIs.
In the Showroom section Dutch designer Gilles de Brock explains how coding can boost creativity. Treize Grammes from France takes an opposite line, building charming settings by hand, and Kind from Norway impresses with visual identities that combine emotions with Nordic minimalism. Patrick Rössler presents graphic design treasures from the Bauhaus era, the Hungarian design agency Classmate shows how designers collaborate across different countries and still manage to maintain a coherent line in terms of design. Last, but not least, we interviewed Anette Lenz, jury member of the competition »100 Best Posters — Germany, Austria, Switzerland«, about trends and the meaning of posters today.
The cover
Why just one cover, when you can have a variety? Embracing this idea, the October issue of novum appears in four different colours and was embossed with two different hot foils and a gold spot colour. For the first time we also used micro-embossing, a technique that enables very fine details to be worked into the embossing die. Often this technique is used in protection against forgery, but as you see from our cover, it is also a great way to create intriguing optical accents.
On the wrap-around cover we used five embossing dies in different sizes, made by MSP Prägetechnik. As both larger areas and also fine details were embossed, it was necessary to do extensive testing to produce the best results with foils (Kurz) and paper (RecyCard from Papyrus Deutschland). The embossing itself also required great skill and sensitivity and that was delivered superbly by August Conzelmann AG.
The design on the cover comes from Milch+Honig, and, as a design bureau based in Munich, for the October issue the subject foremost in many people´s minds here is the Oktoberfest. As the designers at Milch+Honig have extensive experience with high-end print products, the finishing technique, the paper and the design were all expertly coordinated to produce a beautiful and successful result.
And, as masters of all that, Milch+Honig went one step further: with micro-embossing to integrate hidden messages. Working with the motion agency Paul Bewegt, they also concealed one or two things in the cover of novum – digitally, you understand. Using augmented reality parts of the cover can be brought to life – you can see this via an app on your smartphone or tablet.
