Typographie -- 21e siècleIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé : Visual identities from all over the world are the focus of this month’s novum+. For clients as diverse as festivals, craftsmen, cannabis products suppliers, or an international ceramic tile award. Explore visual identities in all their facets and international showroom articles on themes from poster design to illustration.
Developing visual identities is an exciting process, and not infrequently it involves a lot of work persuading clients to venture in new directions. In the novum+ section of this issue we present a very broad spectrum of distinctive and eye-catching visual identities.
The multiple-award-winning visual identity for Theater Rotterdam by Vruchtvlees definitely grabbed our attention, and so, too, did the perfect storytelling in the CI for a Greek boutique hotel by the Luminous Design Group. Last year MRD, a German TV channel, also ventured a new look, with a very finely positioned and strongly conceptual design. Contrasting with this, we present a playful interpretation, for the Edelwise Festival (Das Buro), and a design for an electronics retailer (by Werner Design Werks) that really makes this business stand out from its competitors. In total eleven exciting projects are lined up here for you to explore and enjoy...
For our Showroom section we conducted an interview with the outstanding Swiss-school designer and typographer Erich Brechbühl, who has produced some remarkable posters. You can also discover Eva-Maria Offermann’s very conceptual approach to unconventional projects and designs. Plus, we look at how contemporary campaigns develop, in an article about the agency Wolf/Osmankovic, whose work includes the design for a successful election campaign by the Green Party. Also not to be missed is a dip into the portfolio of Casmic Lab, and the imaginative illustrations of Katinka Reinke. Altogether a rich collection of inspiration for a successful new year!
The cover
Whether it’s for a festival, a new brand or a woodworking business – visual identities all start with the proverbial blank canvas. To reflect this initially neutral surface, we chose for our cover a paper that is very elegant in appearance, but not overt; its charm lies in the interesting structure that lends an added haptic experience.
Zeta from Reflex is available in five colours and different weights, which makes it perfect for creating a good impression in both standard business applications and as packaging. It comes in a range of surface finishes – hammered, micro, matt, smooth or linen, each of these variants communicated in a very subtle way. The trouble-free processing and finishing of Zeta gives this paper added advantages as the perfect »blank canvas«.
Munich-based designer Christian Hundertmark (C100 Studio) used all these qualities to best effect in communicating our novum+ theme on this month´s cover.

White, EdwinaIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé :
Out of the blue
12.01.2018
»Blue skies, smilin' at me – nothin' but blue skies do I see« – you’d be forgiven for bursting into song at the sight of the sky-blue cover for novum February.
Our focus theme this time is the fascinating world of illustration – thanks to the daily torrent of photos on all channels, illustration is enjoying a real revival. To inspire your own work this year, we bring you 23 pages of very different illustration styles and highly individual creations.
Note de contenu :
The works of French designer Noémie Cédille exude charm and vitality, whether she is illustrating for a new magazine or for packaging. For a contrast we visited Sea Change, a designer duo that pursues its own very individual philosophy and is not afraid to change direction. Last but not least, we also delved into the work of Tata&Friends who are based in both Linz and Madrid – you, too, will be delighted by their portfolio and the new ideas it delivers.
In our legal series this month we gather together all the key facts on founding and winding up a »GmbH« company and Andreas Koop looks at how to visualise the same content from different cultural perspectives.
Two exciting new indie magazines are featured by Herbert Lechner, along with a new volume from Hermann Schmidt publishers called »Buchstaben im Kopf«, a practical and readable compendium for all those involved in designing texts that whet the reader’s appetite.
The cover
The Pop’Set Range offers a real rainbow palette – for our focus theme on illustration, however, our choice was Blue Sky, an elegant canvas that also heralds spring. Not a single cloud masks the smoothness of the paper with its pleasantly high volume. In terms of printing and processing, there are no limits – it can be embossed and finished with film. Here we bring you the full charm of this paper in its essential form, because the expressive line of Uruguayan illustrator Martin Azambuja (whom we featured in novum 04.16) needs no more than expressive colours to achieve maximum effect. As a speciality we also used a Pantone colour which really brings the tree of pencils to life.

Typographie -- 21e siècleIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé : The weddings market is booming, so it was high time for us to turn our gaze on the many highly individual, unusual, sophisticated, graphically charming and sometimes quirky designs for weddings. Presented in this issue are solutions normally reserved for the wedding guests, or ones that your colleagues stash away in the drawer. In the Showroom section, too, we again have a creative world tour for you, with all kinds of exciting designs. Note de contenu :
Creative journey
In our showroom section we whisk you away to nomocreative in Taiwan, where tradition blends beautifully with modern design treatments. Our correspondent Niels Schrader went to visit the great creative Hansje van Halem in Amsterdam, a designer who favours strong typography in combination with almost psychedelic illustrations. Then there´s Perrine Honoré, giving us an insight into her colourful imagery, plus the Studio Eduardo Aires, well known for their visual identity for the city of Porto, but with many other remarkable works in their portfolio. With Murmure, we bring you one of the most exciting studios in France. All in all, a visual world tour with special highlights.
Design for weddings
There can’t be many designers who have not been asked by friends to design the printed materials for their wedding. In novum+ we show some enchanting, opulent, simple, charming, quirky and colourful designs for weddings, none of them “off the peg”. Normally this kind of work never gets included in the portfolio, which is why it is so exciting to take a peek at it now!
The cover
A type of paper with a pleasant feel and in an unusual colour, rich screenprinting in XXX (gold or silver) and a charming interpretation of the novum+ theme of “Designs for weddings” – admittedly, this is more of a creative ménage à trois than a classic marriage … but all the more intriguing because of it.
Sergio Membrillas’ illustrations, which are generally two-dimensional, always raise a smile – in bright, bold colours his images get straight to the core of the message, while also featuring plenty of details to enjoy. For our cover he turned away from the big colour palette and conjured up instead just outlines to capture strong feelings with a smile. The paper is from the Keaykolour range from Antalis, and appropriately the shade is called Rosebud, a highly individual and charming rosewood colour. This range includes 48 colours and so it was a tough choice for our cover, but the 300 gsm Rosebud won it. It was also an excellent base for screenprinting in a rich XXX, with a hint of romance, but not at all kitschy. Sergio Membrillas was more than happy with the combination of haptics and print finish. His outline drawings, by the way, are not a new departure for him – last year this creative published the delightful book »Summer in the city again« (32 pages, black and white, available for €10 from www.summerinthecityagain.bigcartel.com/). And now he has rang out the wedding bells for us, with a fairytale-like romance…

Typographie -- 21e siècleIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé : The new novum is here and this month it explores that exciting intersection between architecture and design. And there is much to explore – such as visual identities derived from the architecture, orientation systems that respond to the need for inclusive design and facades that enhance our environment with attractive graphic design. As always, we also feature a range of recent projects and diverse articles in the Showroom section. Also, this month’s cover offers inspiration and haptic delight.
Note de contenu :
We also present an interview with Andreas Koop, who has already completed numerous projects in which inclusive design has been an important part. Does the need for this kind of universal accessibility hinder good design or can it in fact be an exciting challenge? Is inclusive design possible and sensible in all circumstances? The responses in this in-depth interview are thought-provoking and should help remove some of the hesitation some designers feel about taking on such projects.
Also in this issue is an article about the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town, for which an impressive CI was produced. And we have an interview with the creatives at Snøhetta, who explain their interdisciplinary approach in joint architecture-graphic design projects. The Dutch studio Graphic Surgery loves the large canvas, while Migliore + Servetto excel in design for major events. We were also attracted by the CI for the Big Beautiful Buildings initiative, and so we talked to the initiators as well as the creatives (Konter) about the interaction in terms of content and form. And, last but not least, Spaceagency brings the future of space a little closer to us with their fantastic installations.
Our brand story this month examines the long history of Miele, and features some interesting adverts through the decades. In our Typography section, we chose a particularly exciting field this time: film intros which often contain some exceptional typographic solutions.
I would like to draw your attention to the topical subject covered this month by our lawyer Andrijana Kojic: The new data protection regulations are causing some confusion – in novum you can get a clear explanation of the main points.
Once again the Showroom section is a highlight of colour and inspiration. The bright, beautiful illustrations of Zebu are sure to delight, as will the fine visual identities created by Turkish designer Nese Nogay. Also lined up for you is the first-class portfolio of Blürbstudio and, last but not least, for our New Talents Berlin series, Felix Wiesner interviews a particularly creative duo in the capital: Jacob | Reischel, admired for their amazing set designs, attractively clean photo design and their own unique imagery!
The cover
Carved in stone – you could almost say that of the cover of this month’s novum: Fuego Stone (available from Papyrus) was the perfect paper for our purpose, aptly expressing the content of this issue. All that was needed was just a little colour ... in this case a Pantone spot colour (805). Via windows, our Art Director Tobias Holzmann gives us a chance to explore the diverse world of architecture.
The Paper
Available in the currently very popular grey and black tones, Fuego Stone has a unique surface feel, coupled with a high volume and a fascinating matt finish. The paper is available for immediate delivery in 90 to 400 gsm, deep black is also delivered in 500 and 700 gsm. Matching envelopes are of course also supplied.
For our cover we chose the elegant colour Stone Grey in 250 gsm on which the spot colour we worked with comes out particularly well.

TypographieIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé : Whatever your preference – espresso or cappuccino, black or green tea – for our July issue we have inspected the entire range and selected some very attractive packaging and visual identities from this market segment for you. But apart from the novum+ on »Tea & Coffee«, we have many more visual delights for you to savour in this month’s novum. Note de contenu :
This month our Showroom takes us to the city of Québec in Canada, where Jeremy Hall runs an excellent small studio. Guillermo Flores, alias Orbeh, charms us with his unique illustrations that conjure up brand new worlds. The works of Monica Zec delight in a different way, with intriguing little visual tricks. Then we go to Austria to Seite Zwei, whose portfolio boasts clever and extensive visual identities, and also to Knoed in Poland, where the creations, whether print or digital, are always an experience.
A special kind of design collective goes under the name of Bureau Stabil, based in Saarbrücken. And, finally, we present you an extensive »making of« about the major Lufthansa re-design, realised by Martin et Karczinski.
Our typography section this time features two new fonts that are quite unusual, and our legal corner continues with part two of an article on the new data-protection regulations – explained expertly and in a way that´s easy to understand. If you missed the first part, you can order a back copy of issue 06.18 here.
The mood lightens then in our brand story, which homes in on the long history of Miele with its many charming subjects from various decades.
The cover
A paper that bursts with summer and enjoyment: Dolcelicious presents titbits such as »Lemon Drizzle«, »Roasted Chestnut« and »Elderflower White«, which combine beautifully into a harmonious colour palette. This is just one of the new additions to the Römerturm range and it came from the recent cooperation with the British manufacturer James Cropper.
For our »Coffee & Tea« theme Dolcelicious is of course a perfect fit, and in the nostalgic colours»“Summer Coulis« and »Kiwi Fizz« it conjures up the ice cafés of the 1950s and mouth-watering petit fours. The luxurious surface finishing on this paper is a real eye-catcher, not just when used on covers: it positively gleams (note: also certified for use in direct food contact) in the field of luxury packaging. Whether for a folding carton or a carrier bag, this brand new material (available in eleven colours and grammages up to 330 gsm) inspired our cover designers Mursal Nasr and Patrick Marc Sommer (typoint, www.typoint.com): If you place the two novum variants in pink and green next to each other, you get a whimsical coffee table scene that looks an absolute delight. Dolcelicious can of course be finished quite easily with many different techniques – its great touch & feel, however, in combination with the expressive colours, has turned our cover into a really »hands-on« experience. Grab those cups and enjoy!
