Our November issue plays with perception: Is it embossed or some kind of optical illusion? A brand new way of dealing with hot foil stamping is the secret behind this visual trick – conjuring up a 3D impression for the eyes this respresents an exciting new addition to the print toolkit. And it´s a perfect introduction to our focus theme this month: creative paper!Note de contenu :
A trick of the eye
When the first samples of Trustseal SFX arrived in our editorial office we were immediately enthusiastic – the optical illusion of a 3D element is simply fascinating and it shows once more that we have by no means explored all the possibilities of print.
This is amply demonstrated in the world tour that we take you on in this issue focusing on »Creative Paper«: Intricate design work from the Czech Republic, elegance from France and a touch of the experimental from Brazil, as well as haptic support for a luxury brand from Austria and quality business papers from Taiwan! Laser-cutting, pop-up elements, fine papers and a cornucopia of print finishes, plus lot of creative sensitivity – all await discovery in this month’s novum. We also bring you an interview with print specialist Frank Denninghoff (Gräfe Druckveredelung), who reveals the latest trends and possibilities in finishing.
The Showroom section in novum 11.18 is also packed with interest: To start with there’s an interview with Peter Mussfeldt, who emigrated from Germany to Ecuador many years ago and is now regarded there as a pioneer of design. Then we look behind the scenes at the much talked about studio APFEL in London and, in conversation with the Spanish bureau Esiete, we learn that design agencies can have a very different philosophy. Another designer who very much does things his own way is Victor Balko – his editorial design projects were an immediate hit with us here at novum.
The cover
A few years ago Studio Twopoints.net produced a cover for us that caused a real stir with its thermosensitive surface – an image of a sunbather turned red when the cover was exposed to UV light (novum 08.13). For the art work for this November’s cover, the team from Hamburg created a graphic-geometric solution to really do justice to and highlight the special hot foil technique and it’s 3D effect. Twopoints: »›Form is the body of colour – colour is the soul of form‹ – so wrote graphic designer and artist Karl Gerstner, who died last year. We owe a great debt of thanks to Gerstner. His approach to design problems has had a strong influence on us. For this cover of novum we captured the soul of autumn in a flexible visual system. The form system comes from investigations carried out for a book about the design of flexible visual systems that we are currently working on.«
Available in the colours gold and silver, you can do quite a lot with »Trustseal SFX«, the latest development from Kurz. But one or two key points must be observed. All of them are explained in this current issue of novum. As for the material – the choice is wide: As ever, for hot foil stamping smooth, coated papers are good, ones that support a sharp printed image.
In the range from Munken (available from: Papyrus) we came across Munken Pure (300 g/qm) in cream white, a variant with a natural surface that is neither extremely smooth nor extremely rough – it has a pleasant feel and the foil contrasts well with it. The whole series of these design papers is available in a wide range of grammages (from 80 to 400 g/qm), and in 1.13 to 1.3 volume. The product family encompasses Kristall, Polar, Lynx and Pure, in colours from brilliant white to high and natural white, as well as cream white – each in a smooth or rougher surface. For stiffer weights there are four papers in »rough« quality, with 1.4 volume and a distinctive surface feel.

TypographieIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé : Whatever your preference – espresso or cappuccino, black or green tea – for our July issue we have inspected the entire range and selected some very attractive packaging and visual identities from this market segment for you. But apart from the novum+ on »Tea & Coffee«, we have many more visual delights for you to savour in this month’s novum. Note de contenu :
This month our Showroom takes us to the city of Québec in Canada, where Jeremy Hall runs an excellent small studio. Guillermo Flores, alias Orbeh, charms us with his unique illustrations that conjure up brand new worlds. The works of Monica Zec delight in a different way, with intriguing little visual tricks. Then we go to Austria to Seite Zwei, whose portfolio boasts clever and extensive visual identities, and also to Knoed in Poland, where the creations, whether print or digital, are always an experience.
A special kind of design collective goes under the name of Bureau Stabil, based in Saarbrücken. And, finally, we present you an extensive »making of« about the major Lufthansa re-design, realised by Martin et Karczinski.
Our typography section this time features two new fonts that are quite unusual, and our legal corner continues with part two of an article on the new data-protection regulations – explained expertly and in a way that´s easy to understand. If you missed the first part, you can order a back copy of issue 06.18 here.
The mood lightens then in our brand story, which homes in on the long history of Miele with its many charming subjects from various decades.
The cover
A paper that bursts with summer and enjoyment: Dolcelicious presents titbits such as »Lemon Drizzle«, »Roasted Chestnut« and »Elderflower White«, which combine beautifully into a harmonious colour palette. This is just one of the new additions to the Römerturm range and it came from the recent cooperation with the British manufacturer James Cropper.
For our »Coffee & Tea« theme Dolcelicious is of course a perfect fit, and in the nostalgic colours»“Summer Coulis« and »Kiwi Fizz« it conjures up the ice cafés of the 1950s and mouth-watering petit fours. The luxurious surface finishing on this paper is a real eye-catcher, not just when used on covers: it positively gleams (note: also certified for use in direct food contact) in the field of luxury packaging. Whether for a folding carton or a carrier bag, this brand new material (available in eleven colours and grammages up to 330 gsm) inspired our cover designers Mursal Nasr and Patrick Marc Sommer (typoint, www.typoint.com): If you place the two novum variants in pink and green next to each other, you get a whimsical coffee table scene that looks an absolute delight. Dolcelicious can of course be finished quite easily with many different techniques – its great touch & feel, however, in combination with the expressive colours, has turned our cover into a really »hands-on« experience. Grab those cups and enjoy!

Graphic haute couture
In our May issue we enter into a sector that thrives on change like perhaps none other: fashion. The designs that are presented in autumn for the following spring are already passé come the fashion shows in January. The points of contact with graphic design are often more sustainable, but no less interesting: How do fashion labels present themselves in terms of graphic design? How do you capture fashion models in drawings? And: What’s the best way to update a traditional brand?Note de contenu :
We went on the trail and discovered some tremendous CIs behind the catwalks, as it were. For example, we have an interview with the gifted fashion illustrator David Downton, whose portfolio contains a string of illustrious names from Chanel to Valentino, and from Harper’s Bazaar to Vogue. He gives us an insider´s view and also passes on some advice to the next generation of fashion illustrators.
In our Showrooms you can look forward to an exciting and international mix of creative talent: Stefano Marro delights with his magical illustrations that rekindle the spirit of Italian futurism. By contrast, the posters and editorial designs of Sven Lindhorst-Emme impress with precision minimalism. A little pop is here, too, in the work of Portuguese designer Marta Veludo, whose creative home is now Amsterdam. We drop in on Manuel Kreuzer who turns out some amazing things from his small studio … with or without a commission. And then there’s Neu – Designbüro – meaning »new«. The innovative approaches seen here confirm the old adage »nomen est omen«.
With this month’s brand story, we revel in being a child again – Schuco’s model vehicles still delight boys and girls of all ages. We also have some exciting paper projects of our own for you: Eberl Print treated its customers to a clever construction, surprising them not only with delightfully scented content, but also and above all with the presentation. One other thing we were keen to share with you – the ever-growing area of foil applications in fashion. A particularly beautiful project by Kurz for this year’s MCBW delighted us all. Herbert Lechner is here, too, reporting on his visit to the German offices of Laurence Publishing in Berlin, which offers a very select programme.

Our search for New Talents Berlin continues this month: This time Felix Wiesner visited Lucas Doerre und Marius Sperlich, who under the name of Vater Lin Miro are experimenting with all the digital and analogue diversity in graphic design in combination with an artistic slant. The cover for this issue of novum, designed by the two creatives, reflects this appetite for different dimensions and design possibilities.
As the plan was to use different finishes, the material had to meet a number of criteria: We finally found the ideal solution in the high-white paper MetsäBoard Prime FBB Bright. This allowed precision embossing and gave a good clean result in hot-foil finishing. This card is also good because of its lightweight design that spells cost-efficiency and sustainability. What you see on the 280 gsm cover is a sculpture created in several embossing stages and then treated to full-page hot-foil finishing – Frank Denninghoff from the Forum Prägefolien Veredelung put all his expertise into this classy creation.
In combination with the mysterious sculpture, the reflective surface (in which the reader can see his/her own reflection) visualises precisely that which fashion is: A seductive envelope. Note the mirror is not homogeneous – its shimmering pattern hints at the transformation that fashion can bring. The two creatives Lucas Doerre and Marius Sperlich opted for »Neon Seamless« from Kurz, that generates fascinating effects. Such transformational properties are indeed comparable with fashion: It, too, can play with colour and contrasts, change surfaces and enliven them, conjure up a new me and create a particular radiance. On top of this, there is of course always a hint of poetry – an art form that seems delicate but is nevertheless powerful…

Out of the blue
12.01.2018
»Blue skies, smilin' at me – nothin' but blue skies do I see« – you’d be forgiven for bursting into song at the sight of the sky-blue cover for novum February.
Our focus theme this time is the fascinating world of illustration – thanks to the daily torrent of photos on all channels, illustration is enjoying a real revival. To inspire your own work this year, we bring you 23 pages of very different illustration styles and highly individual creations.
Note de contenu :
The works of French designer Noémie Cédille exude charm and vitality, whether she is illustrating for a new magazine or for packaging. For a contrast we visited Sea Change, a designer duo that pursues its own very individual philosophy and is not afraid to change direction. Last but not least, we also delved into the work of Tata&Friends who are based in both Linz and Madrid – you, too, will be delighted by their portfolio and the new ideas it delivers.
In our legal series this month we gather together all the key facts on founding and winding up a »GmbH« company and Andreas Koop looks at how to visualise the same content from different cultural perspectives.
Two exciting new indie magazines are featured by Herbert Lechner, along with a new volume from Hermann Schmidt publishers called »Buchstaben im Kopf«, a practical and readable compendium for all those involved in designing texts that whet the reader’s appetite.
The cover
The Pop’Set Range offers a real rainbow palette – for our focus theme on illustration, however, our choice was Blue Sky, an elegant canvas that also heralds spring. Not a single cloud masks the smoothness of the paper with its pleasantly high volume. In terms of printing and processing, there are no limits – it can be embossed and finished with film. Here we bring you the full charm of this paper in its essential form, because the expressive line of Uruguayan illustrator Martin Azambuja (whom we featured in novum 04.16) needs no more than expressive colours to achieve maximum effect. As a speciality we also used a Pantone colour which really brings the tree of pencils to life.

In our showroom we visited the designers at DN&CO, who enjoy print as much as digital creation. Jess Bonham surprised us with her photographic illustrations and in our new series New Talents Berlin we took a look at Feld studio for digital crafts. Last, but not least we talked to the typo nerds at Afrika, a small, but fine studio located in Switzerland.
The cover
To correspond with our main focus »theatre« the design of our cover will spark a whole series of emotions. We used the paper Reef by Gruppo Cordenons, a material with a particularly deep shade of black and a rough, almost sandy surface. Silk screen printing allowed for very rich inking and a partial soft-touch varnish offers a surprising contrast to the rough surface of the paper. The design comes from Studio Mut and the designers from northern Italy quite literally managed to put a lot of drama on our cover.
