Die Aufgabenvielfalt spiegelt sich auch in der Projektauswahl dieses Hefts wider. Die Gitterschale der neuen Pfarrkirche in Holz­kirchen überrascht zunächst als räumlich-geometrisch interessante Struktur. Bei genauerer Auseinandersetzung mit der Brettschichtholz-Konstruktion wird dann ihre ­Komplexität deutlich – und die tragwerksplanerische Leistung, die solch ein besonderes Bauwerk ermöglicht. Die Raffinesse der ultradünnen Dachelemente aus Hochleistungsbeton, die den neuen TGV-Bahnhof in Montpellier vor Regen und Sonne schützen, zeigt sich in der Verteilung der Perforation der Elemente, die sowohl nach statischen Erfordernissen als auch dem Sonnenlauf entsprechend variiert. Für die Bauphasen des Viadukts für Hoch­geschwindigkeitszüge über das Almontetal in Spanien waren unterschiedliche temporäre Tragsysteme zu planen und zu bemessen. Nach Fertigstellung ist davon nichts mehr zu sehen, und fast ist es bedauerlich, dass nur die Beteiligten solche spannenden Zwischenzustände erleben. At the same time, our environment is shaped not only by concert halls and museums, but also railway stations, bridges and power plants. Loadbearing structures and spatial effect are very much linked in such buildings, which means that convincing solutions mainly come about only as the result of close collaboration between structural ­engineers and architects. In accord with the basic concept of Detail structure, the project discussions in this issue focus on the role of the structural engineer. Roof and supports work together as a system in the central station in The Hague, with its glass-covered roof construction supported on tree columns and composed of rhombic panels. In Surrey, Canada, an extremely slim, timber suspended roof describes a long vertical curve over swimming pools serving families and competitive swimmers − and succeeds in overcoming wind uplift forces. The exceedingly slender steel shaft of the new observation tower in Brighton, on which visitors slide up into the sky in a glazed cockpit, required special engineering measures to dampen ­vibrations. All the projects clearly show how engineers overcome structural challenges and contribute to a successful completed project. For the access bridge to a new island in ­Nijmegen, Ney-Poulissen engineers designed a highly sculptural, integral, prestressed ­post-tensioned reinforced concrete bridge. With the extension to the European Southern Observatory in Garching, the engineers at Mayr Ludescher Partner ensured the light, floating effect of the cantilevering building was achieved by providing an efficient loadbearing structure. In the elegant, bright, naturally lit interior of the Factory Hall in Landsberg am Lech by ­Ackermann Architekten and Christoph Ackermann Ingenieure, a clearly defined, carefully detailed structure fabricated from standard rolled sections adds to the high quality of the architecture and the working environment. This group of structural engineers operates at the interface of construction and art, often undertaking the complete realisation of art objects.
