Manchmal ist die Planungs- und Bauzeit sogar so deutlich reduziert, dass dabei Rekorde aufgestellt werden. In Krisenzeiten wie der Covid-19-Pandemie, wenn die Not groß ist und der Bedarf nach neuen Funktionsräumen schnell gedeckt werden muss, rückt die modulare Bauweise deshalb noch stärker in den Fokus. So haben Carlo Ratti und Italo Rota kürzlich ein kombinierbares Raummodul entworfen, das die Infrastruktur von Krankenhäusern zur Behandlung von Corona-Patienten ergänzen kann. Die umgebauten Container nehmen jeweils zwei Intensivbetten auf und reduzieren die Ansteckungsgefahr durch ein Biocontainment-System mit Unterdruck. Das Open-Source-Projekt nennt sich Cura – Connected Units for Respiratory Ailments und kam erstmals in Turin zum Einsatz. Als autarke Plug-in-Isoliereinheiten können die Module so schnell aufgebaut werden wie ein Klinikzelt, heißt es. Welches Potenzial die Bauweise mit modularen und vor­gefertigten Elementen außerdem bietet, zeigen wir in unserer aktuellen Juni-Augabe. „Der Planungsprozess funktioniert anders als beim konventionellen Bauen... die Prozesse von Planung und Bauen greifen ineinander“, erläutert Barbara Holzer in ­unserem Interview. Holzer Kobler Architekturen haben maßgebliche Erfahrung mit Prefab-Bauweisen und Containern, sie loten die Parameter der Bauweise von Projekt zu Projekt bis an ihre Grenzen aus. Dass mit vorfabrizierten Betonele­men­ten wegweisende Wohnungsbauten mit vielen Qualitäten ­möglich sind, wird auch bei einem kürzlich fertiggestellten Projekt von Far frohn&rojas in Berlin deutlich: Die Architekten nutzen die industrielle Vorfertigung von einzelnen Elementen für ein ­vorbildliches Wohnregal mit großen Spannweiten und flexiblen Grundrissen. Unsere weiteren Dokumentationen zeigen zwei ­Projekte in Großbritannien, die aus unterschiedlichen Raum­modulen konstruiert sind. WilkinsonEyre ließen die komplett ausgestatteten und möblierten Holzeinheiten ihres Studentendorfs in Wiltshire auf der Baustelle mit dem Kran positionieren. Für ihr Hotel in London stapelten Doone Silver Kerr recycelte Schiffs­container zu einem Gebäude mit markanter Fassade. Ungeachtet der Bauweise von Gebäuden hat sich der Arbeitsalltag in Architekturbüros seit dem Lockdown maßgeblich geändert. Digitale Prozesse und virtuelle Begegnungen sind omnipräsent, der soziale Austausch hat sich auf das Netz und seine ungeahnten Ressourcen verlagert. Viele Erfahrungen, die wir in diesen Monaten machen, können wir auch weiterhin einsetzen. Die Pandemie lehrt uns nicht nur im Büro-, sondern auch im Hochschul- oder im Redaktionsalltag, mit neuen Tools umzugehen, Abläufe neu zu strukturieren und dabei auf Möglichkeiten zurückzugreifen, die wir bislang nicht voll ausgeschöpft hatten. As an engineer and architect, Marc Mimram has completed a great many large and small bridges as well as other projects with complex loadbearing structures. In the interview, the trained mathematician, engineer, architect and philosopher explains his approach and stresses the importance he sees in responsible engagement with the existing situation. All the projects in this issue make clear how structural engineering has a considerable ­influence on the architecture and the urban design impact of buildings. In the case of the stadium in Nice, the undulating form of its ­hybrid structure in glued laminated timber and steel makes reference to the surrounding hilly countryside. The reserved appearance of the steel structure in the Netherlands, on the other hand, creates a spacious, well-lit, column-free hall to act as the communicative heart of the building. With the office high-rise in Turin by Renzo Piano, the engineering structure shimmers as a defining design element through the transparent facade. In the final case study, the designers of the Collier Memorial at MIT in Cambridge, USA, explain why the keystone was place first ­before any of the other massive granite blocks. With the extension to the European Southern Observatory in Garching, the engineers at Mayr Ludescher Partner ensured the light, floating effect of the cantilevering building was achieved by providing an efficient loadbearing structure. In the elegant, bright, naturally lit interior of the Factory Hall in Landsberg am Lech by ­Ackermann Architekten and Christoph Ackermann Ingenieure, a clearly defined, carefully detailed structure fabricated from standard rolled sections adds to the high quality of the architecture and the working environment. The background article about ArtEngineering shows that the engineer’s skills are also appreciated in this special field of work. This group of structural engineers operates at the interface of construction and art, often undertaking the complete realisation of art objects.
