Typographie -- 21e siècleIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé : Visual identities from all over the world are the focus of this month’s novum+. For clients as diverse as festivals, craftsmen, cannabis products suppliers, or an international ceramic tile award. Explore visual identities in all their facets and international showroom articles on themes from poster design to illustration.
Developing visual identities is an exciting process, and not infrequently it involves a lot of work persuading clients to venture in new directions. In the novum+ section of this issue we present a very broad spectrum of distinctive and eye-catching visual identities.
The multiple-award-winning visual identity for Theater Rotterdam by Vruchtvlees definitely grabbed our attention, and so, too, did the perfect storytelling in the CI for a Greek boutique hotel by the Luminous Design Group. Last year MRD, a German TV channel, also ventured a new look, with a very finely positioned and strongly conceptual design. Contrasting with this, we present a playful interpretation, for the Edelwise Festival (Das Buro), and a design for an electronics retailer (by Werner Design Werks) that really makes this business stand out from its competitors. In total eleven exciting projects are lined up here for you to explore and enjoy...
For our Showroom section we conducted an interview with the outstanding Swiss-school designer and typographer Erich Brechbühl, who has produced some remarkable posters. You can also discover Eva-Maria Offermann’s very conceptual approach to unconventional projects and designs. Plus, we look at how contemporary campaigns develop, in an article about the agency Wolf/Osmankovic, whose work includes the design for a successful election campaign by the Green Party. Also not to be missed is a dip into the portfolio of Casmic Lab, and the imaginative illustrations of Katinka Reinke. Altogether a rich collection of inspiration for a successful new year!
The cover
Whether it’s for a festival, a new brand or a woodworking business – visual identities all start with the proverbial blank canvas. To reflect this initially neutral surface, we chose for our cover a paper that is very elegant in appearance, but not overt; its charm lies in the interesting structure that lends an added haptic experience.
Zeta from Reflex is available in five colours and different weights, which makes it perfect for creating a good impression in both standard business applications and as packaging. It comes in a range of surface finishes – hammered, micro, matt, smooth or linen, each of these variants communicated in a very subtle way. The trouble-free processing and finishing of Zeta gives this paper added advantages as the perfect »blank canvas«.
Munich-based designer Christian Hundertmark (C100 Studio) used all these qualities to best effect in communicating our novum+ theme on this month´s cover.

Cold and grey outside? Well, we´ve got just the right thing for you: In the new issue of novum, we bring you lots of inspiring projects and creative ideas, plus a fireworks display of a cover. Featuring an expressive motif by Spanish illustrator Agnés Ricart and a fire-red Chromolux card, the cover of novum 01.20 will definitely inject life into the grey days of winter. Inside, too, there is much to explore – we present designers and studios from Hong Kong to Peru, and in the novum+ section, we take a close look at customer magazines.
While many established magazines are suffering a drop in sales, customer magazines are ever more popular. They continue to be a wonderful communication tool for transporting values and raising brand allegiance. It´s a strategy that works, thanks also to the high level of creativity demonstrated in the design of these magazines. In our novum+ section we present a selection of notable customer magazines. From big brands that impress with courage and innovation, to the small local bookstore which wins over customers with its passion and good content, customer magazines are a tremendous playground for graphic designers.
In the Showroom section of our January issue we visit Ruth Chao in Hong Kong. For her being a designer is a dream come true and now she successfully combines Asian elegance with Western clarity. Richard Vijgen from the Netherlands uses Big Data to visualise through design and research the stories that lie behind the data. VM& Estudio Gráfico fuse Peruvian influences with klassical graphic design and Yulia Popova from Berlin designs with great energy and a deep love of typography. Semiotik Design from Greece merge minimalist aesthetics with strong concepts and last, but not least we present the powerful illustrations of Agnés Ricart from Spain, a young creative who is also responsible for the cover of this issue.
In our novum+ section we take a closer look at various customer magazines and show how different they can be. From classical and refined to edgy and colourful – anything goes and big brands prove just as innovative as small entrepreneurs.
The cover
The cover motif for this issue, illustrated by Agnés Ricart, shows the non-binary artist Arca, who resists pigeonholing and conventions. We took up this idea in the design, too, and simply turned the Chromolux card used in this January issue around, so that the shiny bright red surface is now seen on the inside of the cover. It shows how effective it can be to sometimes depart from the familiar.

Scheinberger, Felix (1969-....)
Stark, Martin (1973-....)Index. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé : Even though a whole rainbow of colours is available, creatives still love black and white. Elegant, expressive and somehow fascinatingly elusive, this play of light and shade gives rise to some fantastic work of all kinds. Starting with a wonderful, lavishly produced cover, we bring you exciting work in black and white! For example, we look at the new Frankenstein book, impressively illustrated by Martin Stark in black and white, and we conduct an interview with this gifted illustrator. Sagmeister+Walsh, too, delight us with some insights into a new and exciting project. In Australia we discover the Dolphin Hotel which had it´s new visual identity done all in monochrome (m35). François Olislaeger intrigues us with an installation … entirely without colour. For their own CI, the creatives at Forth+Back also went for monochrome, as did Paul Belford in his packaging for a brand of soap. All this and more awaits in the monochrome world presented in novum 02.19. Note de contenu :
In the Showroom section we interviewed Kilian Stauss in his studio processform and talked about interdisciplinary work and the delights of the unexpected. A thought-provoking encounter! We head to Thailand, to Jackkrit Anantakul and delight in his fireworks display of colour and form. In the Netherlands, we discover a talented duo - twins Janna and Hilde Meeus, and their top-class graphic design. Then there´s Studio91 and the intriguing story of how it got going … something you´ll not find by googling.
A new series by Patrick Rössler takes us to the more hidden aspects of the Bauhaus, on this, the 100th anniversary of the influential design school. We bring you the first part in this issue.
The cover
The splendid, mostly hand-finished (!) cover of this issue plays with contrasts in multiple ways: two levels give added charm – finely lasered by Stigler and also hand laminated there. The material AstroKing by Gruppo Cordenons in variants black and white provides the perfect base.
You can read just how this was created, and about the technique of delicate lasering and laminating in an interview with Andrea Stigler in this issue. A handy hint in case you want to try out this technique: If you want to do it in a large print run, then start planning well ahead, because it takes time. A lot of it is high-precision work done by hand, and you don´t get this kind of perfection overnight. The result is even more fascinating: Our typographical cover in black and white, designed by Melville Brand Design, was in expert hands at Stigler, who have the skill and patience to produce this kind of quality. Our choice of paper for this – AstroKing (250 gsm, white and 350 gsm black) from Grupo Cordenons, was also perfect for this production: The deep black variant was used as the background, because for lasering it would have produced too much black dust. The bright white variant was no problem to laser. To avoid any colour leakage of the black paper (this, too, you have to check), we varnished the surface, which in turn produced a very interesting surface feel.
We also did a binding test on it at f&w (offset printing) – with laminated sheets the final thickness is very much something to take into account.

A few years ago a well known trend researcher predicted that people would live ever more healthy lives in future and therefore would soon no longer be consuming alcohol. Well, that last bit hasn´t happened yet, it seems. Thankfully, say we, because the theme of »bars & drinks« has provided us not only with a very attractive novum+ this month, it has also delivered a wonderfully tipsy cover motif.
Bars can have a somewhat mysterious air – think of those gloomy downtown dives with sinister characters in dark corners, out-of-the-way pubs where people slowly get to know each other, and nameless hotel bars where you never know what might happen next. Abject loneliness or clandestine affairs – novels are full of descriptions of people in bars.
To gather inspiration for the cover motif of this issue, Janina Engel delved into the world of bars and put down her observations on paper, in the form of charming doodles. In our novum+ theme on »bars & drinks« we serve up some wonderful interior design concepts and visual identities to raise the spirits. Whether it´s a pub in Munich, a stylish bar in Sydney, a devilish vermouth from Mallorca or a premium sake from Japan, the projects in our novum+ showcase the spectrum of design in hospitality and drinks. Good design, precise communication and a promise of a good time – what can be better than that?
In the showroom of this issue, we present the elegant appearances of Cansu Merdamert from London, as well as the colorful and powerful designs by Valeria Crociata from Italy. At Spine Studio in Copenhagen, contemporary book design is redefined and in the small Hungarian studio Nur you design with passion for customers all over the world. Last but not least, Ark Visual gives you a taste of what Israeli design currently has to offer – as always, there is a lot to discover.

No, you are not seeing double. We've produced the cover of this issue in two colour variants. We used Majestic paper from Papyrus Germany in the colours of Kings Blue and Casino Gold, and we finished them with the new trend foils from Kurz in the shades of Signal Orange and Combo Green. The hot foil stamping was done by Gräfe Druckveredlung.

This issue really pulls out all the stops! A wrap-around cover resplendent in all the colours of the rainbow, fine gold paper and relief varnishing – no point in choosing gold unless you really go for it!
Gold is not as easy a choice as you might think, however. It can quickly look over the top, which is why many designers only use it sparingly. But who wants to be modest and sensible all the time? In this issue of novum we thought we´d really push the boat out and go all out for gold. It fills the novum+ section and the cover, too, is a gilded delight. A brand new print and finishing technique inspired the designers at Paperlux to this cover. And we think you’ll agree, the results are amazing. Sophisticated printing technology combined with good design – that is real luxury!

The Midas touch
If you want to make an impression, then you´ve really got to go for it. No half measures. When everybody else is dressed up to the nines, then you don´t want to be the one in jeans and T-shirt. Choosing gold as the theme for this month´s novum+ section was at the same time an obligation – to really shine. With features about great projects and also with the cover – that, too, had to be gold. Not just a little, but a lot!
The creatives at Paperlux were certainly on board with this idea. These Hamburg-based designers pulled off a coup for us once before with the 11/11 novum cover, which you could fold in three dimensions. This time, it as a new technique that inspired this latest cover.
The cover
At the end of 2017 Scodix rolled out its new digital print enhancement press. This enables spot varnishing, unusually high relief varnishes and foil finishes. You can see what´s possible on the new novum cover: It shimmers in all the colours of the rainbow and is a delight to touch. The special thing about this process is that it dispenses with the need for screens or printing plates, it can be printed direct from the computer. In this way you can save costs, proofs are cheaper and designers have more scope. It´s even possible to apply different finishes one after the other, to create brand new effects.
For the paper we chose Splendorlux Mirror Oro in 320 gsm from Fedrigoni. This cast coated board is well suited for a wide range of applications and has an attractive gold tone and a reflecting surface.
The foil used on the cover came from Kurz, a company that developed a new foil specially for use with the Scodix printing process. It is available in all the colours of the rainbow.
In the novum+ section, too, it´s all about gold. Used in the CD for a model agency gold adds sophistication, for a Japanese restaurant, freshness. It turns a six-pack of beer into a wild work of art and adds class to cannabis packaging. These and many other projects show just how diverse the applications are for the colour gold.
In the Showroom section, Düsseldorf agency KittoKatsu lives up to its name and Italian designer Monica Lovati shows us CIs with feeling. At Buenaventura from Granada, they love bright and bold, and know just how to blend cultural elements into their work. In Vorarlberg, too, the designers have a knack for fine design: Atelier Hanselwanter shows how to create fantastic design for small clients too. And, last but not least, we visit Ufomammoot in Berlin for our series on New Talents Berlin. These creatives use the latest technologies and test out the limits of the possible.
Gilt edging
We couldn´t resist and just had to do a gilt edge as well. So ten of the copies of novum 03.18 sport this sophisticated finish. They are randomly distributed among our subscribers and the newsagents, and if you are the lucky recipient of one of them, then you have hit lucky twice: Not only do you have a real collectors´ piece, you also get a free one-day ticket to our Creative Paper Conference 2018!
