Graphic haute couture
In our May issue we enter into a sector that thrives on change like perhaps none other: fashion. The designs that are presented in autumn for the following spring are already passé come the fashion shows in January. The points of contact with graphic design are often more sustainable, but no less interesting: How do fashion labels present themselves in terms of graphic design? How do you capture fashion models in drawings? And: What’s the best way to update a traditional brand?Note de contenu :
We went on the trail and discovered some tremendous CIs behind the catwalks, as it were. For example, we have an interview with the gifted fashion illustrator David Downton, whose portfolio contains a string of illustrious names from Chanel to Valentino, and from Harper’s Bazaar to Vogue. He gives us an insider´s view and also passes on some advice to the next generation of fashion illustrators.
In our Showrooms you can look forward to an exciting and international mix of creative talent: Stefano Marro delights with his magical illustrations that rekindle the spirit of Italian futurism. By contrast, the posters and editorial designs of Sven Lindhorst-Emme impress with precision minimalism. A little pop is here, too, in the work of Portuguese designer Marta Veludo, whose creative home is now Amsterdam. We drop in on Manuel Kreuzer who turns out some amazing things from his small studio … with or without a commission. And then there’s Neu – Designbüro – meaning »new«. The innovative approaches seen here confirm the old adage »nomen est omen«.
With this month’s brand story, we revel in being a child again – Schuco’s model vehicles still delight boys and girls of all ages. We also have some exciting paper projects of our own for you: Eberl Print treated its customers to a clever construction, surprising them not only with delightfully scented content, but also and above all with the presentation. One other thing we were keen to share with you – the ever-growing area of foil applications in fashion. A particularly beautiful project by Kurz for this year’s MCBW delighted us all. Herbert Lechner is here, too, reporting on his visit to the German offices of Laurence Publishing in Berlin, which offers a very select programme.
The cover
Our search for New Talents Berlin continues this month: This time Felix Wiesner visited Lucas Doerre und Marius Sperlich, who under the name of Vater Lin Miro are experimenting with all the digital and analogue diversity in graphic design in combination with an artistic slant. The cover for this issue of novum, designed by the two creatives, reflects this appetite for different dimensions and design possibilities.
As the plan was to use different finishes, the material had to meet a number of criteria: We finally found the ideal solution in the high-white paper MetsäBoard Prime FBB Bright. This allowed precision embossing and gave a good clean result in hot-foil finishing. This card is also good because of its lightweight design that spells cost-efficiency and sustainability. What you see on the 280 gsm cover is a sculpture created in several embossing stages and then treated to full-page hot-foil finishing – Frank Denninghoff from the Forum Prägefolien Veredelung put all his expertise into this classy creation.
In combination with the mysterious sculpture, the reflective surface (in which the reader can see his/her own reflection) visualises precisely that which fashion is: A seductive envelope. Note the mirror is not homogeneous – its shimmering pattern hints at the transformation that fashion can bring. The two creatives Lucas Doerre and Marius Sperlich opted for »Neon Seamless« from Kurz, that generates fascinating effects. Such transformational properties are indeed comparable with fashion: It, too, can play with colour and contrasts, change surfaces and enliven them, conjure up a new me and create a particular radiance. On top of this, there is of course always a hint of poetry – an art form that seems delicate but is nevertheless powerful…

A few years ago a well known trend researcher predicted that people would live ever more healthy lives in future and therefore would soon no longer be consuming alcohol. Well, that last bit hasn´t happened yet, it seems. Thankfully, say we, because the theme of »bars & drinks« has provided us not only with a very attractive novum+ this month, it has also delivered a wonderfully tipsy cover motif.
Bars can have a somewhat mysterious air – think of those gloomy downtown dives with sinister characters in dark corners, out-of-the-way pubs where people slowly get to know each other, and nameless hotel bars where you never know what might happen next. Abject loneliness or clandestine affairs – novels are full of descriptions of people in bars.
To gather inspiration for the cover motif of this issue, Janina Engel delved into the world of bars and put down her observations on paper, in the form of charming doodles. In our novum+ theme on »bars & drinks« we serve up some wonderful interior design concepts and visual identities to raise the spirits. Whether it´s a pub in Munich, a stylish bar in Sydney, a devilish vermouth from Mallorca or a premium sake from Japan, the projects in our novum+ showcase the spectrum of design in hospitality and drinks. Good design, precise communication and a promise of a good time – what can be better than that?
In the showroom of this issue, we present the elegant appearances of Cansu Merdamert from London, as well as the colorful and powerful designs by Valeria Crociata from Italy. At Spine Studio in Copenhagen, contemporary book design is redefined and in the small Hungarian studio Nur you design with passion for customers all over the world. Last but not least, Ark Visual gives you a taste of what Israeli design currently has to offer – as always, there is a lot to discover.
The cover
No, you are not seeing double. We've produced the cover of this issue in two colour variants. We used Majestic paper from Papyrus Germany in the colours of Kings Blue and Casino Gold, and we finished them with the new trend foils from Kurz in the shades of Signal Orange and Combo Green. The hot foil stamping was done by Gräfe Druckveredlung.

Cold and grey outside? Well, we´ve got just the right thing for you: In the new issue of novum, we bring you lots of inspiring projects and creative ideas, plus a fireworks display of a cover. Featuring an expressive motif by Spanish illustrator Agnés Ricart and a fire-red Chromolux card, the cover of novum 01.20 will definitely inject life into the grey days of winter. Inside, too, there is much to explore – we present designers and studios from Hong Kong to Peru, and in the novum+ section, we take a close look at customer magazines.
While many established magazines are suffering a drop in sales, customer magazines are ever more popular. They continue to be a wonderful communication tool for transporting values and raising brand allegiance. It´s a strategy that works, thanks also to the high level of creativity demonstrated in the design of these magazines. In our novum+ section we present a selection of notable customer magazines. From big brands that impress with courage and innovation, to the small local bookstore which wins over customers with its passion and good content, customer magazines are a tremendous playground for graphic designers.
In the Showroom section of our January issue we visit Ruth Chao in Hong Kong. For her being a designer is a dream come true and now she successfully combines Asian elegance with Western clarity. Richard Vijgen from the Netherlands uses Big Data to visualise through design and research the stories that lie behind the data. VM& Estudio Gráfico fuse Peruvian influences with klassical graphic design and Yulia Popova from Berlin designs with great energy and a deep love of typography. Semiotik Design from Greece merge minimalist aesthetics with strong concepts and last, but not least we present the powerful illustrations of Agnés Ricart from Spain, a young creative who is also responsible for the cover of this issue.
In our novum+ section we take a closer look at various customer magazines and show how different they can be. From classical and refined to edgy and colourful – anything goes and big brands prove just as innovative as small entrepreneurs.
The cover
The cover motif for this issue, illustrated by Agnés Ricart, shows the non-binary artist Arca, who resists pigeonholing and conventions. We took up this idea in the design, too, and simply turned the Chromolux card used in this January issue around, so that the shiny bright red surface is now seen on the inside of the cover. It shows how effective it can be to sometimes depart from the familiar.

Vieux papiers -- RecyclageIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé : The Oktoberfest in Munich is not normally relevant to the design world, but in this issue of novum it serves as a wonderful source of inspiration for the cover, which is quite literally an all-round delight. On a standard recycling card we used different hot-foil stampings, adding micro-embossing for stylish accent. A total of four different colour variants was produced, finished with two foils in silver and gold and a gold spot colour – the wrap-around motif comes from the Munich design agency Milch+Honig.
Other great projects that exploit the possibilities of paper, print and finishing can be found in our novum+ and Showroom sections. There you can enjoy first-class design from France, Hungary, Norway and the Netherlands, as well as eight pages of prize-winning posters from Germany, Austria and Switzerland.Note de contenu : Paper & Print
Multisensorics is a big theme at the moment in marketing and communication. After all, we human beings don´t just see, we can also feel, hear and smell. Things that appeal to us on several levels are therefore perceived more intensively, we feel them to be more positive and we remember them for longer.
Unusually designed print products can achieve this sustained effect. In the novum+ section this month we bring you lots of exciting examples, such as intelligently conceived packaging, illustrations with hand-made charm and campaigns that attract attention through high-quality finishes. Also there´s lots to discover about recycling papers, beautiful books and sophisticated CIs.
In the Showroom section Dutch designer Gilles de Brock explains how coding can boost creativity. Treize Grammes from France takes an opposite line, building charming settings by hand, and Kind from Norway impresses with visual identities that combine emotions with Nordic minimalism. Patrick Rössler presents graphic design treasures from the Bauhaus era, the Hungarian design agency Classmate shows how designers collaborate across different countries and still manage to maintain a coherent line in terms of design. Last, but not least, we interviewed Anette Lenz, jury member of the competition »100 Best Posters — Germany, Austria, Switzerland«, about trends and the meaning of posters today.
The cover
Why just one cover, when you can have a variety? Embracing this idea, the October issue of novum appears in four different colours and was embossed with two different hot foils and a gold spot colour. For the first time we also used micro-embossing, a technique that enables very fine details to be worked into the embossing die. Often this technique is used in protection against forgery, but as you see from our cover, it is also a great way to create intriguing optical accents.
On the wrap-around cover we used five embossing dies in different sizes, made by MSP Prägetechnik. As both larger areas and also fine details were embossed, it was necessary to do extensive testing to produce the best results with foils (Kurz) and paper (RecyCard from Papyrus Deutschland). The embossing itself also required great skill and sensitivity and that was delivered superbly by August Conzelmann AG.
The design on the cover comes from Milch+Honig, and, as a design bureau based in Munich, for the October issue the subject foremost in many people´s minds here is the Oktoberfest. As the designers at Milch+Honig have extensive experience with high-end print products, the finishing technique, the paper and the design were all expertly coordinated to produce a beautiful and successful result.
And, as masters of all that, Milch+Honig went one step further: with micro-embossing to integrate hidden messages. Working with the motion agency Paul Bewegt, they also concealed one or two things in the cover of novum – digitally, you understand. Using augmented reality parts of the cover can be brought to life – you can see this via an app on your smartphone or tablet.

Storytelling has always been an effective tool in communication. Every brand, every company has a story to tell ... just waiting to be discovered and appropriately presented. In novum 09.19 you get the chance to compare a wide range of different approaches to this task, e.g. with a focus on illustration, text or animation.
You can purchase a PDF of novum 09.19 for EUR 9,99.

We talked to experts with many years of storytelling experience, and bring you the background behind some exciting stories. In the Showroom section we cast a glance at this year´s European Design Awards, travel with you to Austria, the US and Singapore and present lots of inspiration, from illustration to graphics and digital highlights.
Our correspondent Susanne Schaller, for example, visited Bureau in Singapore and learned about the interesting philosophy behind their designs. In an article about Erste Liga, you can read more about the designer behind the cover of novum 05.19. We also bring you the delightful illustrations of Julia Schwarz and take you along to the studio of Solid Bold in Austria. International and diverse – this issue again takes a wide sweep through different design genres. Not forgetting of course, the chance to inspect the winning entries in the European Design Awards.
novum+: storytelling
We explore the focal theme of storytelling from quite different perspectives. Insights into brand development and customer magazines come from interviews with branding specialists Jäger & Jäger and publishing experts from Muehlhausmoers. And, as regards digital creations, we learn much from the storytelling short films of The Lot Creative. In this up-to-date review of storytelling solutions, we bring you the background behind the success stories.
The cover
The cover, too, tells a story: After eighteen years as editor-in-chief, Bettina Schulz is handing over the reins to Christine Moosmann as of this issue – Christian Weiss has captured this information in a charming illustration. The paper used is Bauhaus Dessau from Gmund, a material that is all about quality and clarity. This unpretentious new paper is available exclusively in the “Selection” range of the Igepa Group. It comes in 120 to 350 gsm and also features two clear white tones.
The excellent processing qualities of Bauhaus Dessau encouraged us not least to dip into the magic box of print finishing tricks: we indulged in a multi-stage embossing process, and added a few delicate accents in hot foil to produce an amazingly sculptured effect. Printers Gräfe Druck made the stars really shine by using Luxor foil in the trend colour of amorphous blue, and our logotype, too, was given a fine, gleaming outline.
