TypographieIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé : »All about bikes!« That’s the topic of our new issue and we took a closer look at great design projects from all around the world. Beautiful bicycles, brilliant identities, whacky illustrations and great magazines – in this issue design and bike enthusiasts will get their money’s worth. Furthermore we present the winners of the poster contest »100 Beste Plakate«, our author Andreas Koop wonders about the design of Donald Trump’s new wall and we start a new series about »100 years of New Typography«. Our cover is well worth seeing too. A beautiful fine paper in combination with hot foil stamping makes it a real highlight. Note de contenu : Content

In »Leder« gebunden
17.08.2017

Produits cosmétiques -- ConditionnementIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé : High-end cosmetics and medical products are generally marketed with a clear, clean look. So, for October´s cover of novum we have chosen a material that is very lively, but still communicates the elegance of pure white.
In terms of content this time, our novum+ section focuses on the very broad field of health and beauty from a number of angles. We have a wide range of examples for you, including a visual identity for a clinic and sophisticated packaging for luxury cosmetics. Along the way we explore the graphic design history of the Geigy brand for which over the years many a well known designer has worked, and an interview with Eva Wünsch and Luisa Stömer, whose book »Ebbe und Blut« (Ebb and [menstrual] Flow) has received much attention.
In the Showroom section we present the winners of Gold in the European Design Awards, look over the shoulder of gifted illustrator Patrycja Podkoscielny, visit Studio Mut in South Tyrol and give an insight into the multidisciplinary Atelier 522 whose philosophy is truly special.
The next article in our series on the »New Typography« takes us back in time to the city of Frankfurt in the 1920s, when the urban development program of estates housing expert Ernst May fostered a whole design movement touching upon many areas of life.
And in his column, Andreas Koop muses on »unreal realities« and »bleak realities« – explore with him thoughts on appearances and reality and how graphic design finds its place here.
Or take a closer look at the fascinating options presented by register punching – a useful but also a decorative element. Silvia Lerch has produced a very practical and informative guide to what’s involved.
Also in her column, our lawyer Andrijana Kojic writes about how to recind contracts – something that is indeed possible, you just have to know how.
The cover
White stands for clarity, freshness and purity. As such it is an ideal component in the visual design of health and beauty products. Combined with haptic elements, this clean aesthetic moves to a new level of subtlety.
We were able to capture all these qualities with Keaykolour. The entire collection contains papers made of recycled pulp, conforming to FSC regulations, in weights of 90 to 450 gsm. One member of this product family is card-quality (300 gsm) “Keaykolour Geprägt” available from Antalis in the variants Hammer blow, Horizon, Leather, Cedar and Linear. We chose linear embossed 300 gsm card quality in snow white which produces a sophisticated play of light and shade and feels almost velvety to the touch.
For the high-end graphic design, we have Studio Grau of Berlin to thank – a multiple-award-winning team of designers who we featured in novum 07.17. We were very pleased that they agreed to visualise this theme for us: The delicate, metallic shades of pastel give eye-shadow like emphasis to the motif. Special colours (Pantone 8361 and 488) were the answer for such a subtle, elegant solution. The perfect way to “make up” the cover for an issue about health and beauty, we thought!

Mise en page et typographieIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Note de contenu : What will work be like in the future? How can we influence future developments? Where does our responsibility lie? Will we be living in the city or in the countryside? And are AI and AR a blessing or a curse? On the subject of the future, there are many pressing and interesting questions. We asked those questions for the September issue of novum. The answers are thought-provoking and inspirational.
The cover, too, opens up unusual new insights. The partially open spine reveals the stitching behind, and silk screen printing in silver and neon green adds contrast to the luxurious grey paper.
Today everything happens very quickly, and it has to. Ideas are sought and found instantly – on Instagram. Information comes from Google. But some things are too important to be dealt with quickly. Like, for example, what our future will look like.
In the latest issue of novum we have taken time to talk to creatives and researchers about how they see the future developing. The result is ten extended interviews in which we explore identity, new technologies, the question of how we want to live, work and design in the future, how we will be communicating, and not least the responsibility of the designer in all this. We guarantee you a thought-provoking and inspirational read.
This is not a fast read – but it will be very rewarding. So open up your mind to this unusual issue of novum – and the thought-provoking ideas, inspiration and possibilities contained in it.
When it comes to the future, one thing you can be sure of is that it won’t be like today. So for this issue of novum – focusing on the future – we also opted for another format. Instead of the usual structure of novum+ and Showroom, we bring you a series of thought-provoking interviews about the future. This time the inspiration comes not so much from images, but from ideas and visions.
Many aspects such as singularity, behaviour and artificial intelligence recur as a common thread throughout these interviews. And we have sought to reflect this in the thread-stitched binding. In the 94-year history of novum this is the first issue to have such a binding, and it is quite a special one. We used different neon threads such as are normally found in the textile industry. They give a very special note throughout the magazine and the quality of the binding underlines the high importance of this theme.
The cover
This, too, opens up unusual new insights. The partially open spine reveals the stitching behind, and the neon threads glow against the dark body of the magazine. For the paper we used Conqueror Cartridge in 300 gsm from Antalis which has a particularly fine grey tone.
The paper with its muted colour is intriguingly contrasted by the printing. Screen printing makes the colours stand out strongly and a bright neon green points the way auspiciously into an – admittedly somewhat psychedelic – future. A delicate silver and a spot colour add further accents.

In this issue we feature the following articles:

Typographie - DesignIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé :
Our November issue plays with perception: Is it embossed or some kind of optical illusion? A brand new way of dealing with hot foil stamping is the secret behind this visual trick – conjuring up a 3D impression for the eyes this respresents an exciting new addition to the print toolkit. And it´s a perfect introduction to our focus theme this month: creative paper!Note de contenu :
A trick of the eye
When the first samples of Trustseal SFX arrived in our editorial office we were immediately enthusiastic – the optical illusion of a 3D element is simply fascinating and it shows once more that we have by no means explored all the possibilities of print.
This is amply demonstrated in the world tour that we take you on in this issue focusing on »Creative Paper«: Intricate design work from the Czech Republic, elegance from France and a touch of the experimental from Brazil, as well as haptic support for a luxury brand from Austria and quality business papers from Taiwan! Laser-cutting, pop-up elements, fine papers and a cornucopia of print finishes, plus lot of creative sensitivity – all await discovery in this month’s novum. We also bring you an interview with print specialist Frank Denninghoff (Gräfe Druckveredelung), who reveals the latest trends and possibilities in finishing.
The Showroom section in novum 11.18 is also packed with interest: To start with there’s an interview with Peter Mussfeldt, who emigrated from Germany to Ecuador many years ago and is now regarded there as a pioneer of design. Then we look behind the scenes at the much talked about studio APFEL in London and, in conversation with the Spanish bureau Esiete, we learn that design agencies can have a very different philosophy. Another designer who very much does things his own way is Victor Balko – his editorial design projects were an immediate hit with us here at novum.
The cover
A few years ago Studio Twopoints.net produced a cover for us that caused a real stir with its thermosensitive surface – an image of a sunbather turned red when the cover was exposed to UV light (novum 08.13). For the art work for this November’s cover, the team from Hamburg created a graphic-geometric solution to really do justice to and highlight the special hot foil technique and it’s 3D effect. Twopoints: »›Form is the body of colour – colour is the soul of form‹ – so wrote graphic designer and artist Karl Gerstner, who died last year. We owe a great debt of thanks to Gerstner. His approach to design problems has had a strong influence on us. For this cover of novum we captured the soul of autumn in a flexible visual system. The form system comes from investigations carried out for a book about the design of flexible visual systems that we are currently working on.«
Available in the colours gold and silver, you can do quite a lot with »Trustseal SFX«, the latest development from Kurz. But one or two key points must be observed. All of them are explained in this current issue of novum. As for the material – the choice is wide: As ever, for hot foil stamping smooth, coated papers are good, ones that support a sharp printed image.
In the range from Munken (available from: Papyrus) we came across Munken Pure (300 g/qm) in cream white, a variant with a natural surface that is neither extremely smooth nor extremely rough – it has a pleasant feel and the foil contrasts well with it. The whole series of these design papers is available in a wide range of grammages (from 80 to 400 g/qm), and in 1.13 to 1.3 volume. The product family encompasses Kristall, Polar, Lynx and Pure, in colours from brilliant white to high and natural white, as well as cream white – each in a smooth or rougher surface. For stiffer weights there are four papers in »rough« quality, with 1.4 volume and a distinctive surface feel.
