A few years ago a well known trend researcher predicted that people would live ever more healthy lives in future and therefore would soon no longer be consuming alcohol. Well, that last bit hasn´t happened yet, it seems. Thankfully, say we, because the theme of »bars & drinks« has provided us not only with a very attractive novum+ this month, it has also delivered a wonderfully tipsy cover motif.
Bars can have a somewhat mysterious air – think of those gloomy downtown dives with sinister characters in dark corners, out-of-the-way pubs where people slowly get to know each other, and nameless hotel bars where you never know what might happen next. Abject loneliness or clandestine affairs – novels are full of descriptions of people in bars.
To gather inspiration for the cover motif of this issue, Janina Engel delved into the world of bars and put down her observations on paper, in the form of charming doodles. In our novum+ theme on »bars & drinks« we serve up some wonderful interior design concepts and visual identities to raise the spirits. Whether it´s a pub in Munich, a stylish bar in Sydney, a devilish vermouth from Mallorca or a premium sake from Japan, the projects in our novum+ showcase the spectrum of design in hospitality and drinks. Good design, precise communication and a promise of a good time – what can be better than that?
In the showroom of this issue, we present the elegant appearances of Cansu Merdamert from London, as well as the colorful and powerful designs by Valeria Crociata from Italy. At Spine Studio in Copenhagen, contemporary book design is redefined and in the small Hungarian studio Nur you design with passion for customers all over the world. Last but not least, Ark Visual gives you a taste of what Israeli design currently has to offer – as always, there is a lot to discover.
The cover
No, you are not seeing double. We've produced the cover of this issue in two colour variants. We used Majestic paper from Papyrus Germany in the colours of Kings Blue and Casino Gold, and we finished them with the new trend foils from Kurz in the shades of Signal Orange and Combo Green. The hot foil stamping was done by Gräfe Druckveredlung.

Italian flair in Singapore, authentic cuisine from Quebec, a Michelin-star restaurant in Florence and a stylish motorway service station – our April issue focuses on the topic of »dine & design« and we present great projects from all around the world and a wonderful letterpress cover.
In our April issue we focus on the topic of »dine & design« and there are lots of interesting projects to be discovered. From corporate designs to packaging, when it comes to bars, restaurants and cafés designers can really prove their expertise. We paid a visit to a family-run guest house in the Austrian Alps, a high-class restaurant in Paris and an Armenian design studio that adds a bit of nordic style to the restaurant scene in Moscow. This to name just a few.
In our showroom we present the results of the Global Illustration Award. The award chose the greatest illustrations from thousands of entries from all around the world. We visited Imo Graß, who does design research in the field of lettering and typography and we talked to the designers from Italian studio Humus, who are well known for their successful identities. The German agency Arndtteunissen specializes on transmedia communication and Mary Ponomareva's work is situated between reality and fiction. Last, but not least we paid a visit to Austrian studio Bruch–Idee&Form – the home of great graphic design.
Letterpress adds highlights
To go full circle the cover of our April looks like a menu, designed by Austrian studio Bruch–Idee&Form. This month the designers were able to use the front and the back cover for their design – a rare pleasure. »It doesn't matter which gastronomic enterprise we are talking about, there will always be some kind of menu«, say the designers. »Menus are the most important communication tool for the chef and a fantastic playground for creatives. For us the menu also served as a perfect connecting link between the topic of this issue and the design.«
To accentuate the typographic solution of the designers we chose letterpress. Thin, sharp lines are perfect for letterpress printing, together with the indentations left by the printing process our cover turns into an attractive piece of print work. Infinitive Factory from Graz printed the cover on a Heidelberger letterpress printing machine from 1961 and for each color Druckformen Obermoser from Salzburg made two 2 millimeter magnesium printing blocks. The paper we chose was Salzer Touch, an uncoated paper that adds the magazine a nice and warm touch.
Content, design and print – our April issue is a perfect composition. The chef’s suggestion today: Otl Aicher’s legendary pictograms for starters, followed by tasty design from Italy and typographic storytelling from Germany.

Podkościelny, Patrycja (1988-....)
Produits cosmétiques -- ConditionnementIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé : High-end cosmetics and medical products are generally marketed with a clear, clean look. So, for October´s cover of novum we have chosen a material that is very lively, but still communicates the elegance of pure white.
In terms of content this time, our novum+ section focuses on the very broad field of health and beauty from a number of angles. We have a wide range of examples for you, including a visual identity for a clinic and sophisticated packaging for luxury cosmetics. Along the way we explore the graphic design history of the Geigy brand for which over the years many a well known designer has worked, and an interview with Eva Wünsch and Luisa Stömer, whose book »Ebbe und Blut« (Ebb and [menstrual] Flow) has received much attention.
In the Showroom section we present the winners of Gold in the European Design Awards, look over the shoulder of gifted illustrator Patrycja Podkoscielny, visit Studio Mut in South Tyrol and give an insight into the multidisciplinary Atelier 522 whose philosophy is truly special.
The next article in our series on the »New Typography« takes us back in time to the city of Frankfurt in the 1920s, when the urban development program of estates housing expert Ernst May fostered a whole design movement touching upon many areas of life.
And in his column, Andreas Koop muses on »unreal realities« and »bleak realities« – explore with him thoughts on appearances and reality and how graphic design finds its place here.
Or take a closer look at the fascinating options presented by register punching – a useful but also a decorative element. Silvia Lerch has produced a very practical and informative guide to what’s involved.
Also in her column, our lawyer Andrijana Kojic writes about how to recind contracts – something that is indeed possible, you just have to know how.
The cover
White stands for clarity, freshness and purity. As such it is an ideal component in the visual design of health and beauty products. Combined with haptic elements, this clean aesthetic moves to a new level of subtlety.
We were able to capture all these qualities with Keaykolour. The entire collection contains papers made of recycled pulp, conforming to FSC regulations, in weights of 90 to 450 gsm. One member of this product family is card-quality (300 gsm) “Keaykolour Geprägt” available from Antalis in the variants Hammer blow, Horizon, Leather, Cedar and Linear. We chose linear embossed 300 gsm card quality in snow white which produces a sophisticated play of light and shade and feels almost velvety to the touch.
For the high-end graphic design, we have Studio Grau of Berlin to thank – a multiple-award-winning team of designers who we featured in novum 07.17. We were very pleased that they agreed to visualise this theme for us: The delicate, metallic shades of pastel give eye-shadow like emphasis to the motif. Special colours (Pantone 8361 and 488) were the answer for such a subtle, elegant solution. The perfect way to “make up” the cover for an issue about health and beauty, we thought!
