Typographie -- 21e siècleIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé : 96 years – that's how long novum has been writing design history. It even survived a World War. In well over 1,000 issues, it has inspired and informed designers around the world. This is a proud legacy. Sadly, now it is time to say goodbye.
In this final issue of novum we once again present to you an exciting selection of designers and creative studios, and in the novum+ section, we explore orientation systems for diverse applications, among them a community centre and BER, Berlin´s long awaited new airport.
Note de contenu : The cover
One of the more remarkable facts about novum is that it has always had an international readership. And so, with this last cover, we say thank you – in all the native tongues of our readers.
For the paper, we choose Pergraphica Infinite Black in 300 gsm from Mondi. This fine paper is not only very pleasant to the touch, it is also behaves very well in print finishing. Hot foil embossing by Gräfe Druckveredelung sets off the motif beautifully; for the coating we chose the brand new shade Mastered Green from the Trend Collection by Kurz.

Typographie -- 21e siècleIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé : In our novum+ section design stars like Paula Scher, Mirko Borsche and Fons Hickmann talked to us about the challenges of designing for small and big theatres and how to guarantee visibility even with a small budget.
In our showroom we visited the designers at DN&CO, who enjoy print as much as digital creation. Jess Bonham surprised us with her photographic illustrations and in our new series New Talents Berlin we took a look at Feld studio for digital crafts. Last, but not least we talked to the typo nerds at Afrika, a small, but fine studio located in Switzerland.
The cover
To correspond with our main focus »theatre« the design of our cover will spark a whole series of emotions. We used the paper Reef by Gruppo Cordenons, a material with a particularly deep shade of black and a rough, almost sandy surface. Silk screen printing allowed for very rich inking and a partial soft-touch varnish offers a surprising contrast to the rough surface of the paper. The design comes from Studio Mut and the designers from northern Italy quite literally managed to put a lot of drama on our cover.

Cold and grey outside? Well, we´ve got just the right thing for you: In the new issue of novum, we bring you lots of inspiring projects and creative ideas, plus a fireworks display of a cover. Featuring an expressive motif by Spanish illustrator Agnés Ricart and a fire-red Chromolux card, the cover of novum 01.20 will definitely inject life into the grey days of winter. Inside, too, there is much to explore – we present designers and studios from Hong Kong to Peru, and in the novum+ section, we take a close look at customer magazines.
While many established magazines are suffering a drop in sales, customer magazines are ever more popular. They continue to be a wonderful communication tool for transporting values and raising brand allegiance. It´s a strategy that works, thanks also to the high level of creativity demonstrated in the design of these magazines. In our novum+ section we present a selection of notable customer magazines. From big brands that impress with courage and innovation, to the small local bookstore which wins over customers with its passion and good content, customer magazines are a tremendous playground for graphic designers.
In the Showroom section of our January issue we visit Ruth Chao in Hong Kong. For her being a designer is a dream come true and now she successfully combines Asian elegance with Western clarity. Richard Vijgen from the Netherlands uses Big Data to visualise through design and research the stories that lie behind the data. VM& Estudio Gráfico fuse Peruvian influences with klassical graphic design and Yulia Popova from Berlin designs with great energy and a deep love of typography. Semiotik Design from Greece merge minimalist aesthetics with strong concepts and last, but not least we present the powerful illustrations of Agnés Ricart from Spain, a young creative who is also responsible for the cover of this issue.
In our novum+ section we take a closer look at various customer magazines and show how different they can be. From classical and refined to edgy and colourful – anything goes and big brands prove just as innovative as small entrepreneurs.
The cover
The cover motif for this issue, illustrated by Agnés Ricart, shows the non-binary artist Arca, who resists pigeonholing and conventions. We took up this idea in the design, too, and simply turned the Chromolux card used in this January issue around, so that the shiny bright red surface is now seen on the inside of the cover. It shows how effective it can be to sometimes depart from the familiar.

Out of the blue
12.01.2018
»Blue skies, smilin' at me – nothin' but blue skies do I see« – you’d be forgiven for bursting into song at the sight of the sky-blue cover for novum February.
Our focus theme this time is the fascinating world of illustration – thanks to the daily torrent of photos on all channels, illustration is enjoying a real revival. To inspire your own work this year, we bring you 23 pages of very different illustration styles and highly individual creations.
Note de contenu :
The works of French designer Noémie Cédille exude charm and vitality, whether she is illustrating for a new magazine or for packaging. For a contrast we visited Sea Change, a designer duo that pursues its own very individual philosophy and is not afraid to change direction. Last but not least, we also delved into the work of Tata&Friends who are based in both Linz and Madrid – you, too, will be delighted by their portfolio and the new ideas it delivers.
In our legal series this month we gather together all the key facts on founding and winding up a »GmbH« company and Andreas Koop looks at how to visualise the same content from different cultural perspectives.
Two exciting new indie magazines are featured by Herbert Lechner, along with a new volume from Hermann Schmidt publishers called »Buchstaben im Kopf«, a practical and readable compendium for all those involved in designing texts that whet the reader’s appetite.
The cover
The Pop’Set Range offers a real rainbow palette – for our focus theme on illustration, however, our choice was Blue Sky, an elegant canvas that also heralds spring. Not a single cloud masks the smoothness of the paper with its pleasantly high volume. In terms of printing and processing, there are no limits – it can be embossed and finished with film. Here we bring you the full charm of this paper in its essential form, because the expressive line of Uruguayan illustrator Martin Azambuja (whom we featured in novum 04.16) needs no more than expressive colours to achieve maximum effect. As a speciality we also used a Pantone colour which really brings the tree of pencils to life.

Typographie -- 21e siècleIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé :
This issue really pulls out all the stops! A wrap-around cover resplendent in all the colours of the rainbow, fine gold paper and relief varnishing – no point in choosing gold unless you really go for it!
Gold is not as easy a choice as you might think, however. It can quickly look over the top, which is why many designers only use it sparingly. But who wants to be modest and sensible all the time? In this issue of novum we thought we´d really push the boat out and go all out for gold. It fills the novum+ section and the cover, too, is a gilded delight. A brand new print and finishing technique inspired the designers at Paperlux to this cover. And we think you’ll agree, the results are amazing. Sophisticated printing technology combined with good design – that is real luxury!

The Midas touch
If you want to make an impression, then you´ve really got to go for it. No half measures. When everybody else is dressed up to the nines, then you don´t want to be the one in jeans and T-shirt. Choosing gold as the theme for this month´s novum+ section was at the same time an obligation – to really shine. With features about great projects and also with the cover – that, too, had to be gold. Not just a little, but a lot!
The creatives at Paperlux were certainly on board with this idea. These Hamburg-based designers pulled off a coup for us once before with the 11/11 novum cover, which you could fold in three dimensions. This time, it as a new technique that inspired this latest cover.
The cover
At the end of 2017 Scodix rolled out its new digital print enhancement press. This enables spot varnishing, unusually high relief varnishes and foil finishes. You can see what´s possible on the new novum cover: It shimmers in all the colours of the rainbow and is a delight to touch. The special thing about this process is that it dispenses with the need for screens or printing plates, it can be printed direct from the computer. In this way you can save costs, proofs are cheaper and designers have more scope. It´s even possible to apply different finishes one after the other, to create brand new effects.
For the paper we chose Splendorlux Mirror Oro in 320 gsm from Fedrigoni. This cast coated board is well suited for a wide range of applications and has an attractive gold tone and a reflecting surface.
The foil used on the cover came from Kurz, a company that developed a new foil specially for use with the Scodix printing process. It is available in all the colours of the rainbow.
In the novum+ section, too, it´s all about gold. Used in the CD for a model agency gold adds sophistication, for a Japanese restaurant, freshness. It turns a six-pack of beer into a wild work of art and adds class to cannabis packaging. These and many other projects show just how diverse the applications are for the colour gold.
In the Showroom section, Düsseldorf agency KittoKatsu lives up to its name and Italian designer Monica Lovati shows us CIs with feeling. At Buenaventura from Granada, they love bright and bold, and know just how to blend cultural elements into their work. In Vorarlberg, too, the designers have a knack for fine design: Atelier Hanselwanter shows how to create fantastic design for small clients too. And, last but not least, we visit Ufomammoot in Berlin for our series on New Talents Berlin. These creatives use the latest technologies and test out the limits of the possible.
Gilt edging
We couldn´t resist and just had to do a gilt edge as well. So ten of the copies of novum 03.18 sport this sophisticated finish. They are randomly distributed among our subscribers and the newsagents, and if you are the lucky recipient of one of them, then you have hit lucky twice: Not only do you have a real collectors´ piece, you also get a free one-day ticket to our Creative Paper Conference 2018!
