Typographie -- 21e siècleIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé : 96 years – that's how long novum has been writing design history. It even survived a World War. In well over 1,000 issues, it has inspired and informed designers around the world. This is a proud legacy. Sadly, now it is time to say goodbye.
In this final issue of novum we once again present to you an exciting selection of designers and creative studios, and in the novum+ section, we explore orientation systems for diverse applications, among them a community centre and BER, Berlin´s long awaited new airport.
Note de contenu : The cover
One of the more remarkable facts about novum is that it has always had an international readership. And so, with this last cover, we say thank you – in all the native tongues of our readers.
For the paper, we choose Pergraphica Infinite Black in 300 gsm from Mondi. This fine paper is not only very pleasant to the touch, it is also behaves very well in print finishing. Hot foil embossing by Gräfe Druckveredelung sets off the motif beautifully; for the coating we chose the brand new shade Mastered Green from the Trend Collection by Kurz.

Typographie -- 21e siècleIndex. décimale : 766 Arts graphiques Résumé : Visual identities from all over the world are the focus of this month’s novum+. For clients as diverse as festivals, craftsmen, cannabis products suppliers, or an international ceramic tile award. Explore visual identities in all their facets and international showroom articles on themes from poster design to illustration.
Developing visual identities is an exciting process, and not infrequently it involves a lot of work persuading clients to venture in new directions. In the novum+ section of this issue we present a very broad spectrum of distinctive and eye-catching visual identities.
The multiple-award-winning visual identity for Theater Rotterdam by Vruchtvlees definitely grabbed our attention, and so, too, did the perfect storytelling in the CI for a Greek boutique hotel by the Luminous Design Group. Last year MRD, a German TV channel, also ventured a new look, with a very finely positioned and strongly conceptual design. Contrasting with this, we present a playful interpretation, for the Edelwise Festival (Das Buro), and a design for an electronics retailer (by Werner Design Werks) that really makes this business stand out from its competitors. In total eleven exciting projects are lined up here for you to explore and enjoy...
For our Showroom section we conducted an interview with the outstanding Swiss-school designer and typographer Erich Brechbühl, who has produced some remarkable posters. You can also discover Eva-Maria Offermann’s very conceptual approach to unconventional projects and designs. Plus, we look at how contemporary campaigns develop, in an article about the agency Wolf/Osmankovic, whose work includes the design for a successful election campaign by the Green Party. Also not to be missed is a dip into the portfolio of Casmic Lab, and the imaginative illustrations of Katinka Reinke. Altogether a rich collection of inspiration for a successful new year!
The cover
Whether it’s for a festival, a new brand or a woodworking business – visual identities all start with the proverbial blank canvas. To reflect this initially neutral surface, we chose for our cover a paper that is very elegant in appearance, but not overt; its charm lies in the interesting structure that lends an added haptic experience.
Zeta from Reflex is available in five colours and different weights, which makes it perfect for creating a good impression in both standard business applications and as packaging. It comes in a range of surface finishes – hammered, micro, matt, smooth or linen, each of these variants communicated in a very subtle way. The trouble-free processing and finishing of Zeta gives this paper added advantages as the perfect »blank canvas«.
Munich-based designer Christian Hundertmark (C100 Studio) used all these qualities to best effect in communicating our novum+ theme on this month´s cover.

For a long time perfection was the only goal, now we value the small imperfections, the individual features that make up the charm of the hand-made. The April issue of novum, dedicated to the theme of »hand-made«, presents a range of projects that have been carefully and lovingly hand-crafted. Woodcuts, screenprints, tape art, hand-lettering – all of this and more awaits your discovery in the new novum. And, in line with the theme, the cover of this month´s issue is also hand-made: Students from the University of Applied Sciences in Münster numbered each copy by hand!Note de contenu : The cover
Our plan was to do all the covers in risographic printing, but sadly this was abandoned because of the technical requirements. But in an issue dedicated to the theme of “hand-made”, the cover itself also had to feature some element of hand-crafting. For this we were pleased to have support from students at the University of Applied Sciences in Münster who literally hand-processed each copy!
12,000 covers were numbered in sequence by the budding illustrators – a remarkable achievement. The numbering takes up another aspect of the cover of novum 04.18: As we had to rule our risographic printing, we decided instead to produce individual risographs and place them on the cover. Only our subscribers will have a chance to be the lucky recipients of these signed and numbered art prints. But all our other readers can still enjoy a hand-lettered unique print. As long as stocks last, the risographs will be available to buy as a pack in our online shop.
The risographs
The designs for the risographs were created on the illustration course of Felix Scheinberger and Rüdiger Quass von Deyen at the University of Applied Sciences in Münster. The only brief was to interpret the theme of “hand-made” and the results are most impressive and diverse. Fourteen designs in total were produced, each illustrating different aspects of the hand-made and hand-craft work, or the process of creating such work.
Click here for more about the individual designs…
The risographs were printed in the Munich studio Herr & Frau Rio which has years of experience and interest in this technique. As it is a very special technique, it was important to choose the right material. We used the paper Extrarough by Metapaper which has a very rough surface, as the name says, and also delivers very good printability.
The content
In the novum+ section this month we focus on the theme of »hand-made« and bring you a broad spectrum of works, from woodcut book illustrations and screen prints to hand-painted shop windows, gilded labels, hand-lettering and lots more.
In our Showroom, we go to Berlin to the creative studio of Stan Hema and to all-round talent Vinzent Britz. In London we visit sought-after designers the Yarza Twins, and we report on the American studio Colony. Austria beckons, too, as we drop in on Dunkelblaufastschwarz, returning then to Germany to visit Mydsgn in the Bavarian Allgäu.
