Ponts -- Conception et constructionIndex. décimale : 72 Architecture Résumé : Bridges are among an engineer’s most fascinating projects, even when they are not major items of transport infrastructure. As an engineer and architect, Marc Mimram has completed a great many large and small bridges as well as other projects with complex loadbearing structures. In the interview, the trained mathematician, engineer, architect and philosopher explains his approach and stresses the importance he sees in responsible engagement with the existing situation.
All the projects in this issue make clear how structural engineering has a considerable influence on the architecture and the urban design impact of buildings. In the case of the stadium in Nice, the undulating form of its hybrid structure in glued laminated timber and steel makes reference to the surrounding hilly countryside. The reserved appearance of the steel structure in the Netherlands, on the other hand, creates a spacious, well-lit, column-free hall to act as the communicative heart of the building.
With the office high-rise in Turin by Renzo Piano, the engineering structure shimmers as a defining design element through the transparent facade. In the final case study, the designers of the Collier Memorial at MIT in Cambridge, USA, explain why the keystone was place first before any of the other massive granite blocks.En ligne : http://www.detail-online.com/magazine/structure-12016-27052/ [n° ou bulletin] 01/16 - 2016-01-03 [texte imprimé] . - 2016.

Ponts -- Conception et constructionIndex. décimale : 72 Architecture Résumé :
This edition of DETAIL structure describes international projects to which structural engineers have made significant contributions. For the access bridge to a new island in Nijmegen, Ney-Poulissen engineers designed a highly sculptural, integral, prestressed post-tensioned reinforced concrete bridge.
With the extension to the European Southern Observatory in Garching, the engineers at Mayr Ludescher Partner ensured the light, floating effect of the cantilevering building was achieved by providing an efficient loadbearing structure.
In the elegant, bright, naturally lit interior of the Factory Hall in Landsberg am Lech by Ackermann Architekten and Christoph Ackermann Ingenieure, a clearly defined, carefully detailed structure fabricated from standard rolled sections adds to the high quality of the architecture and the working environment.
The background article about ArtEngineering shows that the engineer’s skills are also appreciated in this special field of work.
This group of structural engineers operates at the interface of construction and art, often undertaking the complete realisation of art objects. In the interview, Herwig Bretis explains their close involvement from the initial concept and how they strive to implement the essence of the design.

Ponts -- Conception et constructionIndex. décimale : 72 Architecture Résumé : With geometric patterns resembling Arabian ornamentation, the dome over the Louvre in Abu Dhabi conjures many associations, but the idea of a complex space-frame structure is certainly not the first that comes to mind.
Parametric 3D models were used in the development of the prefabricated elements, which were bolted and welded together on site in the desert. Steel structures of this kind are an essential part of the supreme discipline of architecture, and the April edition of “Detail” documents various examples of the great scope afforded by steel in building, its aesthetic and constructional advantages and the details implicit to it.
The Catalan trio RCR Architects, who won this year’s Pritzker Prize, enclosed the Soulages Museum in Rodez, France, in a rust-red preoxidized-steel casing, while the internal black-steel lining makes reference to the works of the artist Pierre Soulages exhibited there. The house in Tokyo by Makoto Takei + Chie Nabeshima exploits the advantages of steel with proposals to dismantle certain modules of the skeleton frame in the foreseeable future and re-erect them on the side of the building. In contrast, as part of their conversion of an office development in Oslo, the Norwegian practice of Ghilardi and Hellsten inserted a stabilizing steel “implant” structure and gave the existing building an elegant new face with box-type windows and dark stainless-steel strips, thus enhancing the urban environment at the same time.
These and other projects have been compiled by Frank Kaltenbach in the present issue, which is complemented by a new edition of “Detail structure”, where special emphasis is placed on the role played by engineers in the planning of such buildings. Each new issue of “Detail” will also contain a page on contributors, where the work of photographers, authors, architects and other persons who have played an important role in the production of the magazine is acknowledged.En ligne : http://www.detail-online.com/magazine/steel-construction-29740/ [n° ou bulletin] Vol.2017:N°4 - 2017/04/01 - Bauen mit Stahl = Steel Construction [texte imprimé] . - 2017.
