It applies also to so many other things in daily life and of course it applies to graphic design. A detail such as bold use of just one impressive colour can make all the difference. We think you´ll agree this technique has certainly produced an eye-catching result on this month´s cover, of which there is not one, but two variants! As regards content, the focus is our novum+ section is exclusively on details: For this we talked to type guru Friedrich Forssmann about the obsessiveness that is essential for any typographer, conducted an interview with designer-craftswoman Katja Knahn and explored the new visual identity of City College in New York. We also had a very productive chat with Carlos Magro, Creative Director at Interbrand Spain, about his unusual CD – called »Mind the Gap« – for an international firm of lawyers. And we feature a jaw-dropping interior design for a restaurant – with walls lined with thousands of bones. Cadena of Mexico tells us how their design came about. The cover If you want to be subtle, then avoid Electric Blood and Vibrant Arsenic from the Action range of papermakers Gmund. But if you want to make a splash, then you´ll be very, very happy with this material. Electric Blood is a very specific colour – somewhere between red and orange with an almost neon-like effect. A special surface treatment, applied after the paper has been produced, gives it that distinctive shimmer. Vibrant Arsenic, with the same surface, is a resplendent pure neon yellow. We have used both in producing the cover for this month´s novum, but whichever one you have ended up with, there’s no chance of losing it on your shelves. All the ten expressive colours in Gmund Action – available from Papyrus – keep their promise: Go to Hell Black, Alpine Sparkling Water, Crystal Vanilla Sorbet, Nuclear Acid, Clear Sky Blue, Pastel Heart Attack, Night Offshore Blue, Dark Silver Cloud and of course also Vibrant Arsenic und Electric Blood. The finish Any complicated processing of these visually prominent materials would almost be one detail too far, so the designers at konter studio limited themselves to the contrast-rich progression in one special colour (Pantone 286 C) and a fine embossing carefully finished with hot foil. Thus finished, their artwork uniquely interprets the focus theme this month in a unique way: »Complexity, yes. Sometimes simple but hidden, allows playfulness« … to be discovered on the back cover of this issue. »We love the details. Very often it´s not the overall picture that we delight in, but the tiny, hidden, special aspects, that sometimes can be implemented without an enormous budget. And things really get rewarding when have the opportunity to spend time on such details. So what we produced here is a motif that at first sight is just a burst of colour, but on closer inspection you see the delicate embossing and the hidden content,« say Michelle Flunger and Sascha Schilling of konter – Studio für Gestaltung. Die Gitterschale der neuen Pfarrkirche in Holz­kirchen überrascht zunächst als räumlich-geometrisch interessante Struktur. Bei genauerer Auseinandersetzung mit der Brettschichtholz-Konstruktion wird dann ihre ­Komplexität deutlich – und die tragwerksplanerische Leistung, die solch ein besonderes Bauwerk ermöglicht. Die Raffinesse der ultradünnen Dachelemente aus Hochleistungsbeton, die den neuen TGV-Bahnhof in Montpellier vor Regen und Sonne schützen, zeigt sich in der Verteilung der Perforation der Elemente, die sowohl nach statischen Erfordernissen als auch dem Sonnenlauf entsprechend variiert. Für die Bauphasen des Viadukts für Hoch­geschwindigkeitszüge über das Almontetal in Spanien waren unterschiedliche temporäre Tragsysteme zu planen und zu bemessen. Nach Fertigstellung ist davon nichts mehr zu sehen, und fast ist es bedauerlich, dass nur die Beteiligten solche spannenden Zwischenzustände erleben. Manchmal ist die Planungs- und Bauzeit sogar so deutlich reduziert, dass dabei Rekorde aufgestellt werden. In Krisenzeiten wie der Covid-19-Pandemie, wenn die Not groß ist und der Bedarf nach neuen Funktionsräumen schnell gedeckt werden muss, rückt die modulare Bauweise deshalb noch stärker in den Fokus. So haben Carlo Ratti und Italo Rota kürzlich ein kombinierbares Raummodul entworfen, das die Infrastruktur von Krankenhäusern zur Behandlung von Corona-Patienten ergänzen kann. Die umgebauten Container nehmen jeweils zwei Intensivbetten auf und reduzieren die Ansteckungsgefahr durch ein Biocontainment-System mit Unterdruck. Das Open-Source-Projekt nennt sich Cura – Connected Units for Respiratory Ailments und kam erstmals in Turin zum Einsatz. Als autarke Plug-in-Isoliereinheiten können die Module so schnell aufgebaut werden wie ein Klinikzelt, heißt es. Welches Potenzial die Bauweise mit modularen und vor­gefertigten Elementen außerdem bietet, zeigen wir in unserer aktuellen Juni-Augabe. „Der Planungsprozess funktioniert anders als beim konventionellen Bauen... die Prozesse von Planung und Bauen greifen ineinander“, erläutert Barbara Holzer in ­unserem Interview. Holzer Kobler Architekturen haben maßgebliche Erfahrung mit Prefab-Bauweisen und Containern, sie loten die Parameter der Bauweise von Projekt zu Projekt bis an ihre Grenzen aus. Dass mit vorfabrizierten Betonele­men­ten wegweisende Wohnungsbauten mit vielen Qualitäten ­möglich sind, wird auch bei einem kürzlich fertiggestellten Projekt von Far frohn&rojas in Berlin deutlich: Die Architekten nutzen die industrielle Vorfertigung von einzelnen Elementen für ein ­vorbildliches Wohnregal mit großen Spannweiten und flexiblen Grundrissen. Unsere weiteren Dokumentationen zeigen zwei ­Projekte in Großbritannien, die aus unterschiedlichen Raum­modulen konstruiert sind. WilkinsonEyre ließen die komplett ausgestatteten und möblierten Holzeinheiten ihres Studentendorfs in Wiltshire auf der Baustelle mit dem Kran positionieren. Für ihr Hotel in London stapelten Doone Silver Kerr recycelte Schiffs­container zu einem Gebäude mit markanter Fassade. Ungeachtet der Bauweise von Gebäuden hat sich der Arbeitsalltag in Architekturbüros seit dem Lockdown maßgeblich geändert. Digitale Prozesse und virtuelle Begegnungen sind omnipräsent, der soziale Austausch hat sich auf das Netz und seine ungeahnten Ressourcen verlagert. Viele Erfahrungen, die wir in diesen Monaten machen, können wir auch weiterhin einsetzen. Die Pandemie lehrt uns nicht nur im Büro-, sondern auch im Hochschul- oder im Redaktionsalltag, mit neuen Tools umzugehen, Abläufe neu zu strukturieren und dabei auf Möglichkeiten zurückzugreifen, die wir bislang nicht voll ausgeschöpft hatten. In Krisenzeiten wie der Covid-19-Pandemie, wenn die Not groß ist und der Bedarf nach neuen Funktionsräumen schnell gedeckt werden muss, rückt die modulare Bauweise deshalb noch stärker in den Fokus. So haben Carlo Ratti und Italo Rota kürzlich ein kombinierbares Raummodul entworfen, das die Infrastruktur von Krankenhäusern zur Behandlung von Corona-Patienten ergänzen kann. Die umgebauten Container nehmen jeweils zwei Intensivbetten auf und reduzieren die Ansteckungsgefahr durch ein Biocontainment-System mit Unterdruck. Das Open-Source-Projekt nennt sich Cura – Connected Units for Respiratory Ailments und kam erstmals in Turin zum Einsatz. Als autarke Plug-in-Isoliereinheiten können die Module so schnell aufgebaut werden wie ein Klinikzelt, heißt es. Welches Potenzial die Bauweise mit modularen und vor­gefertigten Elementen außerdem bietet, zeigen wir in unserer aktuellen Juni-Augabe. „Der Planungsprozess funktioniert anders als beim konventionellen Bauen... die Prozesse von Planung und Bauen greifen ineinander“, erläutert Barbara Holzer in ­unserem Interview. Holzer Kobler Architekturen haben maßgebliche Erfahrung mit Prefab-Bauweisen und Containern, sie loten die Parameter der Bauweise von Projekt zu Projekt bis an ihre Grenzen aus. Dass mit vorfabrizierten Betonele­men­ten wegweisende Wohnungsbauten mit vielen Qualitäten ­möglich sind, wird auch bei einem kürzlich fertiggestellten Projekt von Far frohn&rojas in Berlin deutlich: Die Architekten nutzen die industrielle Vorfertigung von einzelnen Elementen für ein ­vorbildliches Wohnregal mit großen Spannweiten und flexiblen Grundrissen. Unsere weiteren Dokumentationen zeigen zwei ­Projekte in Großbritannien, die aus unterschiedlichen Raum­modulen konstruiert sind. WilkinsonEyre ließen die komplett ausgestatteten und möblierten Holzeinheiten ihres Studentendorfs in Wiltshire auf der Baustelle mit dem Kran positionieren. Für ihr Hotel in London stapelten Doone Silver Kerr recycelte Schiffs­container zu einem Gebäude mit markanter Fassade. Ungeachtet der Bauweise von Gebäuden hat sich der Arbeitsalltag in Architekturbüros seit dem Lockdown maßgeblich geändert. Digitale Prozesse und virtuelle Begegnungen sind omnipräsent, der soziale Austausch hat sich auf das Netz und seine ungeahnten Ressourcen verlagert. Viele Erfahrungen, die wir in diesen Monaten machen, können wir auch weiterhin einsetzen. Die Pandemie lehrt uns nicht nur im Büro-, sondern auch im Hochschul- oder im Redaktionsalltag, mit neuen Tools umzugehen, Abläufe neu zu strukturieren und dabei auf Möglichkeiten zurückzugreifen, die wir bislang nicht voll ausgeschöpft hatten.
