Manchmal ist die Planungs- und Bauzeit sogar so deutlich reduziert, dass dabei Rekorde aufgestellt werden. In Krisenzeiten wie der Covid-19-Pandemie, wenn die Not groß ist und der Bedarf nach neuen Funktionsräumen schnell gedeckt werden muss, rückt die modulare Bauweise deshalb noch stärker in den Fokus. So haben Carlo Ratti und Italo Rota kürzlich ein kombinierbares Raummodul entworfen, das die Infrastruktur von Krankenhäusern zur Behandlung von Corona-Patienten ergänzen kann. Die umgebauten Container nehmen jeweils zwei Intensivbetten auf und reduzieren die Ansteckungsgefahr durch ein Biocontainment-System mit Unterdruck. Das Open-Source-Projekt nennt sich Cura – Connected Units for Respiratory Ailments und kam erstmals in Turin zum Einsatz. Als autarke Plug-in-Isoliereinheiten können die Module so schnell aufgebaut werden wie ein Klinikzelt, heißt es. Welches Potenzial die Bauweise mit modularen und vor­gefertigten Elementen außerdem bietet, zeigen wir in unserer aktuellen Juni-Augabe. „Der Planungsprozess funktioniert anders als beim konventionellen Bauen... die Prozesse von Planung und Bauen greifen ineinander“, erläutert Barbara Holzer in ­unserem Interview. Holzer Kobler Architekturen haben maßgebliche Erfahrung mit Prefab-Bauweisen und Containern, sie loten die Parameter der Bauweise von Projekt zu Projekt bis an ihre Grenzen aus. Dass mit vorfabrizierten Betonele­men­ten wegweisende Wohnungsbauten mit vielen Qualitäten ­möglich sind, wird auch bei einem kürzlich fertiggestellten Projekt von Far frohn&rojas in Berlin deutlich: Die Architekten nutzen die industrielle Vorfertigung von einzelnen Elementen für ein ­vorbildliches Wohnregal mit großen Spannweiten und flexiblen Grundrissen. Unsere weiteren Dokumentationen zeigen zwei ­Projekte in Großbritannien, die aus unterschiedlichen Raum­modulen konstruiert sind. WilkinsonEyre ließen die komplett ausgestatteten und möblierten Holzeinheiten ihres Studentendorfs in Wiltshire auf der Baustelle mit dem Kran positionieren. Für ihr Hotel in London stapelten Doone Silver Kerr recycelte Schiffs­container zu einem Gebäude mit markanter Fassade. Ungeachtet der Bauweise von Gebäuden hat sich der Arbeitsalltag in Architekturbüros seit dem Lockdown maßgeblich geändert. Digitale Prozesse und virtuelle Begegnungen sind omnipräsent, der soziale Austausch hat sich auf das Netz und seine ungeahnten Ressourcen verlagert. Viele Erfahrungen, die wir in diesen Monaten machen, können wir auch weiterhin einsetzen. Die Pandemie lehrt uns nicht nur im Büro-, sondern auch im Hochschul- oder im Redaktionsalltag, mit neuen Tools umzugehen, Abläufe neu zu strukturieren und dabei auf Möglichkeiten zurückzugreifen, die wir bislang nicht voll ausgeschöpft hatten. In common with politicians, architects were caught unawares by the largest wave of migration since the end of the Second World War. However, are tent cities and containers the best solution for cheap, dignified, and quickly assembled accommodation for displaced persons? This challenging situation, along with the changing urban landscape, with its ever-diminishing space, calls into question existing standards in relation to serial housing. Bold and unconventional ideas are called for if architects are to offer high-quality solutions. From eccentric experiments all the way to projects that have already been realised, international design teams present their work between the twin poles of unconventional developments and life-saving shelters in this volume spanning more than 250 pages. Introduced with articles on design principles, and divided into three sections according to the form the structures take when delivered – cuboid, panels and custom units – the book covers everything from playful follies to architectural constructions for the homeless and outpatient medical stations which offer a response to social problems and space shortages. The text, photographs and plans put forward ideas as to how more can be done than the mere assembling of containers. Should we not first consider notions bordering on the absurd in order to come up with workable solutions for housing today ? Why should students attend a lecture, when the corresponding script is available for download? Books are readily available online, and the latest research findings are often published on the internet before anywhere else. Nevertheless, there are many good reasons why institutes of higher learning and research need a strong spatial presence, and these should be reflected by compelling architectural concepts. For our March issue on buildings for research and instruction, we have compiled a selection of university building projects that have recently been completed in places such as Cambridge, Kassel, Senegal and Peru. Most buildings that accommodate libraries, lecture halls, labs or large and complex programmes share one thing in particular: their architecture pointedly enhances common areas, providing their users with diverse opportunities for leisure and recreation. These can range from informal meeting spaces with comfortable seating, or indoor gyms for a quick game of handball during the lunch break, as found in the buildings of the new campus at Paris-Saclay. Shaded outdoor spaces or common areas flooded with natural light are also popular. The more convincing the spatial quality and benefits for the community, the sooner the architecture will be accepted. Some of the academic ­campuses are cleverly integrated into the surrounding historical district, as examined in our documentations of the Faculty of Radio and Television in Katowice and the Central European University (CEU) in Budapest. As places of encounter, these institutions not only need good architecture but must also be met with a sense of open-mindedness and political support. How such issues are being handled in Hungary is explained in our article on the CEU. More than twentyTechnicalReports,Cuides to Good Practice and Design Recommendations have already been published on various interesting items. The present Hcziicihook is a synthesis of the knowledge gatheredby the Commission about the design of precast building structures. It has been written to help Architects and Engineers to achieve a full understanding of precast concrete building structures and their specific design philosophy. Ideally, our purpose is to provide Architects and Engineers, who never designed a project in precast concrete, with enough information in this Htriidhok to make a correct initial design for a project. It is also hoped that Professors and Students from Universities and Technical Institutes will find useful basic information about precast concrete construction in this Haiidbook. The present document has been produced and reviewed by the whole Commission during the past two years under the leadership of the Commission Chairman, who also carried out the final editorial. The FIP Commission on Prefabrication hopes that the Planning and Design Handbook on Precast Building Structures will contribute in an important way to the better understanding and spread of precast concrete structures. The Commission is also grateful for the financia1 support from Precast Concrete Federations, nanufacturers and other industries, through which the publication of this handsomely illustrated document was made possible.
