This issue really pulls out all the stops! A wrap-around cover resplendent in all the colours of the rainbow, fine gold paper and relief varnishing – no point in choosing gold unless you really go for it!
Gold is not as easy a choice as you might think, however. It can quickly look over the top, which is why many designers only use it sparingly. But who wants to be modest and sensible all the time? In this issue of novum we thought we´d really push the boat out and go all out for gold. It fills the novum+ section and the cover, too, is a gilded delight. A brand new print and finishing technique inspired the designers at Paperlux to this cover. And we think you’ll agree, the results are amazing. Sophisticated printing technology combined with good design – that is real luxury!

The Midas touch
If you want to make an impression, then you´ve really got to go for it. No half measures. When everybody else is dressed up to the nines, then you don´t want to be the one in jeans and T-shirt. Choosing gold as the theme for this month´s novum+ section was at the same time an obligation – to really shine. With features about great projects and also with the cover – that, too, had to be gold. Not just a little, but a lot!
The creatives at Paperlux were certainly on board with this idea. These Hamburg-based designers pulled off a coup for us once before with the 11/11 novum cover, which you could fold in three dimensions. This time, it as a new technique that inspired this latest cover.
The cover
At the end of 2017 Scodix rolled out its new digital print enhancement press. This enables spot varnishing, unusually high relief varnishes and foil finishes. You can see what´s possible on the new novum cover: It shimmers in all the colours of the rainbow and is a delight to touch. The special thing about this process is that it dispenses with the need for screens or printing plates, it can be printed direct from the computer. In this way you can save costs, proofs are cheaper and designers have more scope. It´s even possible to apply different finishes one after the other, to create brand new effects.
For the paper we chose Splendorlux Mirror Oro in 320 gsm from Fedrigoni. This cast coated board is well suited for a wide range of applications and has an attractive gold tone and a reflecting surface.
The foil used on the cover came from Kurz, a company that developed a new foil specially for use with the Scodix printing process. It is available in all the colours of the rainbow.
In the novum+ section, too, it´s all about gold. Used in the CD for a model agency gold adds sophistication, for a Japanese restaurant, freshness. It turns a six-pack of beer into a wild work of art and adds class to cannabis packaging. These and many other projects show just how diverse the applications are for the colour gold.
In the Showroom section, Düsseldorf agency KittoKatsu lives up to its name and Italian designer Monica Lovati shows us CIs with feeling. At Buenaventura from Granada, they love bright and bold, and know just how to blend cultural elements into their work. In Vorarlberg, too, the designers have a knack for fine design: Atelier Hanselwanter shows how to create fantastic design for small clients too. And, last but not least, we visit Ufomammoot in Berlin for our series on New Talents Berlin. These creatives use the latest technologies and test out the limits of the possible.
Gilt edging
We couldn´t resist and just had to do a gilt edge as well. So ten of the copies of novum 03.18 sport this sophisticated finish. In our May issue we enter into a sector that thrives on change like perhaps none other: fashion. The designs that are presented in autumn for the following spring are already passé come the fashion shows in January. The points of contact with graphic design are often more sustainable, but no less interesting: How do fashion labels present themselves in terms of graphic design? How do you capture fashion models in drawings? And: What’s the best way to update a traditional brand?Note de contenu :
We went on the trail and discovered some tremendous CIs behind the catwalks, as it were. For example, we have an interview with the gifted fashion illustrator David Downton, whose portfolio contains a string of illustrious names from Chanel to Valentino, and from Harper’s Bazaar to Vogue. He gives us an insider´s view and also passes on some advice to the next generation of fashion illustrators.
In our Showrooms you can look forward to an exciting and international mix of creative talent: Stefano Marro delights with his magical illustrations that rekindle the spirit of Italian futurism. By contrast, the posters and editorial designs of Sven Lindhorst-Emme impress with precision minimalism. A little pop is here, too, in the work of Portuguese designer Marta Veludo, whose creative home is now Amsterdam. We drop in on Manuel Kreuzer who turns out some amazing things from his small studio … with or without a commission. And then there’s Neu – Designbüro – meaning »new«. The innovative approaches seen here confirm the old adage »nomen est omen«.
With this month’s brand story, we revel in being a child again – Schuco’s model vehicles still delight boys and girls of all ages. We also have some exciting paper projects of our own for you: Eberl Print treated its customers to a clever construction, surprising them not only with delightfully scented content, but also and above all with the presentation. One other thing we were keen to share with you – the ever-growing area of foil applications in fashion. A particularly beautiful project by Kurz for this year’s MCBW delighted us all. Herbert Lechner is here, too, reporting on his visit to the German offices of Laurence Publishing in Berlin, which offers a very select programme.

Our search for New Talents Berlin continues this month: This time Felix Wiesner visited Lucas Doerre und Marius Sperlich, who under the name of Vater Lin Miro are experimenting with all the digital and analogue diversity in graphic design in combination with an artistic slant. The cover for this issue of novum, designed by the two creatives, reflects this appetite for different dimensions and design possibilities.
As the plan was to use different finishes, the material had to meet a number of criteria: We finally found the ideal solution in the high-white paper MetsäBoard Prime FBB Bright. This allowed precision embossing and gave a good clean result in hot-foil finishing. This card is also good because of its lightweight design that spells cost-efficiency and sustainability. What you see on the 280 gsm cover is a sculpture created in several embossing stages and then treated to full-page hot-foil finishing – Frank Denninghoff from the Forum Prägefolien Veredelung put all his expertise into this classy creation.
In combination with the mysterious sculpture, the reflective surface (in which the reader can see his/her own reflection) visualises precisely that which fashion is: A seductive envelope. Note the mirror is not homogeneous – its shimmering pattern hints at the transformation that fashion can bring. The two creatives Lucas Doerre and Marius Sperlich opted for »Neon Seamless« from Kurz, that generates fascinating effects. Such transformational properties are indeed comparable with fashion: It, too, can play with colour and contrasts, change surfaces and enliven them, conjure up a new me and create a particular radiance. On top of this, there is of course always a hint of poetry – an art form that seems delicate but is nevertheless powerful…

From attractive window displays to strong visual identities for retailers, and also how to present the brand experience in store: In our October issue of novum you can sit back and enjoy a relaxed shopping tour of innovative ideas from all over the world.Note de contenu : Our cover design sets just the right tone for the focus this month on retail design. It’s about real physical spaces, about visual and material experiences. Where does the shopper’s gaze linger longest? Why do we spend more time in one store than in another? Attractive window displays, the right spatial organisation and a feeling of willing and pleasant immersion in a brand experience or philosophy – these are some of the keys to keeping the customers coming into the store.
On this subject we interviewed retail specialists at DFrost and peeked into the excellent and award-winning small shop, rar. We also present you a new concept for a newspaper stand and we report on a visit to a charming children’s boutique designed by Silvio Girolamo. Then we talked to Storey Design about eye-catching window displays and dipped into the unusual shop concepts from the Mexican studio Yeye. Not forgetting, of course, an introduction to the innovative ideas of the Spanish agency Zooco.
In the Showroom section we are pleased to present the fantastic illustrations of Daniel Egneus, we visited the studio of Tough Slate Design in Ukraine and report on the results of the 2018 edition of the venerable 100 Best Posters award. Then, to round this section off, we end up in Spain, with »I am blue I am pink«, enjoying their amazing set designs that really give wings to the imagination…
The cover
A visual magnet is one way of describing what the Cologne-based agency KD1 produced for this month’s cover: it’s a three-dimensional fireworks display, interpreting the spatial aspect of the novum+ theme. The material chosen for this impressive realisation is also one that can be used in store design: The Yupo range of long-lasting, synthetic papers that are water and UV-resistant - available from Papier Union (www.papierunion.de).
The particular type chosen for our cover is SuperYupo, often used for city maps, climbing or diving maps, price tickets or also for packaging. This real all-rounder, which is also easy to print, is available in 90 to 400 gsm weights. The range also contains a self-adhesive variant, called YupoTako, which has tiny »suction cups« on the back that leave no trace when it´s time to remove the paper. Another remarkable paper in this range is YupoJelly, PVC-free and 100% recyclable, that was developed for applications on glass, making it interesting for use in window designs. This variety, too, can be easily removed and even re-applied elsewhere. For offset printing the manufacturer recommends foil colours.

In the Showroom section we are pleased to present the fantastic illustrations of Daniel Egneus, we visited the studio of Tough Slate Design in Ukraine and report on the results of the 2018 edition of the venerable 100 Best Posters award. Then, to round this section off, we end up in Spain, with »I am blue I am pink«, enjoying their amazing set designs that really give wings to the imagination…
The cover
A visual magnet is one way of describing what the Cologne-based agency KD1 produced for this month’s cover: it’s a three-dimensional fireworks display, interpreting the spatial aspect of the novum+ theme. The material chosen for this impressive realisation is also one that can be used in store design: The Yupo range of long-lasting, synthetic papers that are water and UV-resistant - available from Papier Union (www.papierunion.de).
The particular type chosen for our cover is SuperYupo, often used for city maps, climbing or diving maps, price tickets or also for packaging. This real all-rounder, which is also easy to print, is available in 90 to 400 gsm weights. The range also contains a self-adhesive variant, called YupoTako, which has tiny »suction cups« on the back that leave no trace when it´s time to remove the paper. Another remarkable paper in this range is YupoJelly, PVC-free and 100% recyclable, that was developed for applications on glass, making it interesting for use in window designs. This variety, too, can be easily removed and even re-applied elsewhere. For offset printing the manufacturer recommends foil colours.

Explore visual identities in all their facets and international showroom articles on themes from poster design to illustration.
Developing visual identities is an exciting process, and not infrequently it involves a lot of work persuading clients to venture in new directions. In the novum+ section of this issue we present a very broad spectrum of distinctive and eye-catching visual identities.
The multiple-award-winning visual identity for Theater Rotterdam by Vruchtvlees definitely grabbed our attention, and so, too, did the perfect storytelling in the CI for a Greek boutique hotel by the Luminous Design Group. Last year MRD, a German TV channel, also ventured a new look, with a very finely positioned and strongly conceptual design. Contrasting with this, we present a playful interpretation, for the Edelwise Festival (Das Buro), and a design for an electronics retailer (by Werner Design Werks) that really makes this business stand out from its competitors. In total eleven exciting projects are lined up here for you to explore and enjoy...
For our Showroom section we conducted an interview with the outstanding Swiss-school designer and typographer Erich Brechbühl, who has produced some remarkable posters. You can also discover Eva-Maria Offermann’s very conceptual approach to unconventional projects and designs. Plus, we look at how contemporary campaigns develop, in an article about the agency Wolf/Osmankovic, whose work includes the design for a successful election campaign by the Green Party. Also not to be missed is a dip into the portfolio of Casmic Lab, and the imaginative illustrations of Katinka Reinke. Altogether a rich collection of inspiration for a successful new year!

Whether it’s for a festival, a new brand or a woodworking business – visual identities all start with the proverbial blank canvas. To reflect this initially neutral surface, we chose for our cover a paper that is very elegant in appearance, but not overt; its charm lies in the interesting structure that lends an added haptic experience.
Zeta from Reflex is available in five colours and different weights, which makes it perfect for creating a good impression in both standard business applications and as packaging. It comes in a range of surface finishes – hammered, micro, matt, smooth or linen, each of these variants communicated in a very subtle way. The trouble-free processing and finishing of Zeta gives this paper added advantages as the perfect »blank canvas«.
Munich-based designer Christian Hundertmark (C100 Studio) used all these qualities to best effect in communicating our novum+ theme on this month´s cover.
