Muholi, Zanele (1972-....)
Photographie -- 21e siècleIndex. décimale : 77(092) Photographes Résumé :
Born in South Africa in 1972, Zanele Muholi came to prominence in the early 2000s with photographs that sought to envision black lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, and intersex lives beyond deviance or victimhood.
Muholi's work challenges hetero-patriarchal ideologies and representations, presenting the participants in their photographs as confident and beautiful individuals bravely existing in the face of prejudice, intolerance, and, frequently, violence.
While Muholi's intimate photographs of others launched their international career, their intense self-portraits solidified it.
The illustrations include images from the key series Muholi has produced over the past 20 years, as well as never-before-published and recent works.
This book, and the exhibition it accompanies, present the full breadth of Muholi's photographic and activist practice.Zanele Muholi [texte imprimé] / Yasufumi Nakori, Auteur ; Zanele Muholi (1972-....), Photographe ; Sarah Allen, Auteur ; Tate modern, Collectivité éditrice . - London : Tate Publishing, 2020 . - 1 vol. Los Angeles (Calif.) -- Photographie -- 1990-2020Index. décimale : 77(092) Photographes Résumé :
The early settlers dubbed California The Golden State, and The Land of Milk and Honey. Today there are the obvious ironies, sprawl, spaghetti junctions and skid row, but the place is not so easily distilled or visualized, either as a clichéd paradise or as its demise.
There’s a strange kind of harmony when it’s all seen together--the sublime, the psychedelic, the self-destructive.
Like all places, it's unpredictable and contradictory, but to greater extremes.
Cultures and histories coexist, the beautiful sits next to the ugly, the redemptive next to the despairing, and all under a strange and singular light, as transcendent as it is harsh.
